At CarbonStore, we know that navigating carbon funding can feel complex.

That is why we are joining this practical course on 18 June 2026 to help woodland owners better understand the opportunities available through the Woodland Carbon Code.

Led by David McCulloch, Head of CarbonStore, and Alex MacKinnon, Carbon Project Manager, this session will give a grounded, practical overview of what is involved in securing carbon funding, from key considerations through to the steps woodland owners need to take.

We’re also pleased to see Dr Vicky West MICFor shortlisted for the Net Zero Innovation Award at the Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK) Awards 2026.

Vicky’s long standing leadership in overseeing the Woodland Carbon Code’s development has been vital to establishing credibility and trust in UK woodland carbon projects. Strong standards and rigorous oversight are essential to ensuring that carbon claims are credible, measurable, and durable.

As developers, we recognise that effective climate action depends on both responsible project delivery and robust governance. Recognition across both sides of the system reflects the maturity and strength of the UK’s woodland carbon framework.

Congratulations to Vicky and all those shortlisted.

We’re proud to share that our very own Alexander MacKinnon has been shortlisted for the Net Zero Innovation Award at the Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK) Awards 2026.

This award recognises individuals making a measurable contribution to the forestry and wood sector’s progress towards the UK’s net zero ambitions.

Alex has been recognised for his leadership in shaping standards, promoting integrity in woodland carbon projects, and encouraging constructive collaboration across the sector. His work helps quantify the real climate related benefits that woodland creation delivers, ensuring that the PIUs and WCUs issued by the Woodland Carbon Code are underpinned by robust governance and long-term credibility.

At CarbonStore, we believe net zero must be built on trust. That means high integrity projects, transparent frameworks and open dialogue between developers, regulators and landowners.

Congratulations Alex, a well deserved recognition of your contribution to the sector.

Following the recent launch of the UK Nature Projects Association (UKNPA), we’re proud that CarbonStore, part of Tilhill Forestry is a founding member of this new, industry-led collaboration.

UKNPA brings together project developers, investors and policy makers to help accelerate woodland creation and peatland restoration, and to support a trusted, high integrity market for nature based credits that delivers real climate and biodiversity benefits.

Alongside fellow founding members ADLnature, Caledonian Climate Partners, Forest Carbon Ltd and Scottish Woodlands Ltd, we're focused on enabling the scale of delivery the UK needs, through collaboration, strong governance and long term investment.

The positive engagement at the London launch, including support from organisations such as the UK Woodland Carbon Code, The Peatland Code, the Green Finance Institute and The Soil Association, highlights the growing momentum behind nature-based solutions.

We’re proud to share that Alex MacKinnon, from our CarbonStore team, has been appointed to the Woodland Carbon Code Advisory Board.

Over the next two years, Alex will work alongside industry leaders to help guide the future of the Woodland Carbon Code - shaping how it’s developed, applied, and promoted across the UK. This role is all about ensuring the Code continues to support high-quality woodland creation, robust carbon markets, and strong environmental outcomes.

Alex said:

“This is a great opportunity to strengthen how project developers like CarbonStore contribute to the future of the Woodland Carbon Code, ensuring it continues to work for both landowners and the wider industry."

Woodland is no longer a passive asset!

When planned and managed well, woodland creation can be a dynamic part of a rural business portfolio.

✔ Generate annual income from carbon
✔ Boost land value
✔ Build long-term timber potential
✔ Increase biodiversity and environmental resilience

David McCulloch from CarbonStore explains how to take a strategic approach to woodland income in this episode of the Farm Gate podcast: https://pulse.ly/gcycnwmjt5

Landowners can now partner with investors who fund woodland creation in return for long-term access to carbon credits.

Here’s how it works:

• You lease the land for 25 years
• You earn income based on the value of the carbon units generated
• At the end of the lease, the land – and woodland – returns to you
• You keep a planted asset with timber potential, biodiversity value, and even leftover PIUs

David McCulloch, Head of CarbonStore, breaks it all down in the Farm Gate podcast – listen now: https://pulse.ly/rkddgoobqo

Thinking of planting trees on your land?

Here’s how woodland can pay its way:

1. Direct Income: Manage the process yourself or work with a forestry management company - like Tilhill Forestry - to develop and maintain a woodland asset.

2. Sell Land for Forestry Use: Carbon-backed forestry land is in demand – and may command a higher price.

3. Investor Partnerships: Partner with investors under a long-term lease model. You benefit from annual carbon credit income and retain the woodland after 25 years – a growing timber asset with future value.

This consultation is another encouraging effort by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to ensure that integrity lies at the heart of our carbon and nature markets while also establishing the UK as a world-leading hub for climate finance.

With the government wanting “to move climate finance mobilisation from the billions to the trillions,” its ambitions are both significant and heartening, so we must not let perfect become the enemy of good in formulating our policies.

With the consultation into the WCC’s and the PC’s biodiversity crediting project now complete, we are looking forward to a through explanation as to what monitoring protocols will be needed, how your woodland and peatland will be accredited and how biodiversity accreditation could support the value of your Peatland and Woodland Carbon Units.

Get the date in your diary!
📆Thursday 20th March between 2pm and 3.30pm.

Join the Woodland Carbon Code and Peatland Code teams to hear about our biodiversity crediting project including the lessons learned and next steps.

At CarbonStore, we welcome the ambitious targets set by the Committee for Climate Change’s Seventh Carbon Budget. However, we must question it's feasibility.

By 2030, the CCC aims for 37,000 hectares of new woodland annually, and by 2040, woodland should cover 16% of the UK, up from 13% today – an increase of 750,000 hectares.

Currently, government funding is the primary support for woodland creation, but with fragile finances, the private sector will need to step up and bear the financial burden. As such, the incentives must come from either timber or carbon.

According to the budget, the CCC recommends just 35% of the newly planted woodlands be productive conifers, limiting the timber market's role. This means the woodland carbon market must do the heavy lifting, which requires a transformation in the market for PIUs and WCUs.

To achieve this, we need:

🌿 Increased transaction volumes and prices
🌿 Lower commission rates
🌿 Standardised and streamlined transaction processes

There is much work to be done, and the CarbonStore team will wholeheartedly support any efforts to realise these much-needed improvements.”

Together, we can make a significant impact on our environment and economy. 🌍
