Mechanical extraction is how commercial crops of timber are harvested. These machines speed up the process of timber harvesting as well as increase the safety of the operators.

Sometimes the trees are a little too big for the machines so climbers or hand cutters have to dismantle the trees before the machines can move & process them. This was one such occasion.

There was a main road on one side of this narrow site, a water treatment plant on the other, an old railway trackbed & a stream with high sides running through it so it had its challenges.

After dismantling my trees I had the opportunity to record parts if the operation with my drone.

Big thanks to Stewarty Forestry & Blacklock harvesting, great companies to work with.

Often arboricultural tree work takes place in gardens with no access for heavy machinery but sometimes we can get the big toys out.

We carried out the dismantling of this big twin stemmed ash that unfortunately was crumbling due to Ash Dieback (chalara) with our pals at The Chestnuts Tree Works during the summer.

Because of the access & speed the Mewp (work platform), mini digger with timber grab & tracked chipper gave us we were able to bring this tree down safely in just 1 day. If we were climbing & relying on manpower alone it may have taken as many as 2 or 3 days.

I'm finally getting around to editing the vast amount of footage I have of my tree work. If you like the look of any of these shots & want a video for yourself or your business you can hire me to create one for you & of course if you have any tree work or bushcraft related requirements just email me at [email protected].

Massive tree climbed & dismantled.

The trees we have to take down in the UK are normally no taller than 35m /115ft but occasionally they are closer to 60m / 200ft like this monster row of conifers. I'm up a particularly tall Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii).

It is exhilarating working at this height but you must stay very focused as any error from myself or the ground crew could be disastrous.

Some of these conifers had started to snap & uproot so unfortunately they had to be taken down.

I stripped the branches on the way up, felled the top out with the help of a pull rope & sectioned the stem down until it was low enough to fell.

A short video of some of the storm damage remediation we had thanks to storm Arwen. This large Beech branch had started to break away from the main stem & would threaten the rest of the tree & infrastructure around it if it peeled off.

We had to free the broken branches at the top of the canopy to allow the large branch to drop clear (the branch may have weighed upwards of 3 tonnes).

Thanks to the fine folk at who made sure their paintball center was clear of dangerous wind-blow before allowing play to commence.

Aside from providing top quality tree surgery services we also create chainsaw sculptures. See a few of our examples below. When a tree gets damaged, diseased or gets too big for its position it doesn't mean it can't still provide beauty & decoration in your garden. Chainsaw sculptures or rustic garden furniture can be a great way to turn condemed trees into useful objects.

We removed this Atlas Cedar last year as the roots were failing. We dismantled the tree & ground out the roots with a stump grinder so that the area could be turfed. We milled the stem & used the wood to create a simple garden bench. It is nice to use the wood for something we can leave in the garden it came from & of course the branch wood & other waste material was recycled off site as well. Ask us what we can use the wood from your removed trees to make.

Greener Glens dismantling a big Red Oak this week. Unfortunately the base was rotten & was becoming unstable. A beautiful tree & a pleasure to climb. We processed the timber & removed the stump as well. Very happy customer.

A cold but beautiful days climbing near Strathaven today. 2 large spruces dismantled over a road & a house. A speedline was used for the branches near the house & through directional cutting techniques all other branches & timber felled onto brash mats to cushion the impacts. Another very satisfied customer.
