Continuing on from our extensive data collection from Organic Matter Profile and Golf Green Health Indexing testing, our general statistics are showing:
2020, 40-60mm: 0.2% - 10.5% with an average of 2.8%.
2021, 40-60mm: 0.2% - 11.3% with an average of 3.1%.
(Stats based on hundreds of greens from all types of venues, ages of greens, seed-types and constructions).
Not too much variance between 2020 and 2021 data for this increment. Usually organic matter at this depth is due to a historical build-up over a period of time. A little more of a physical challenge to reduce OM as it becomes buried and less natural breakdown occurs.
Generally, our data is showing greens which are less than 1-2% OM at 40-60mm tend to be young greens (less than 5 years old). OM builds up throughout the profile as greens age.
Regular testing of OM helps to identify levels throughout the green and allows for reduction practices to become implemented before it is buried deeper in the profile.
If you’re interested in testing your facility, and want to organise a testing kit to be sent to you, please feel free to contact me: [email protected].

Also, thanks to you for the interest you have shown to date on this introduction to our data collection. 👍

Continuing on from our extensive data collection from Organic Matter Profile and Golf Green Health Indexing testing, our general statistics are showing:
2020, 20-40mm: 0.3% - 10.4%, with an average of 3.8%.
2021, 20-40mm: 0.3% - 21.5% with an average of 4.2%.
(Stats based on hundreds of greens from all types of venues, ages of greens, seed-types and constructions).
Whilst organic matter (OM) is usually lower than in the top 0-20mm section, this is not always the case. Higher OM at this lower depth could be the result of increased top-dressing applications and cause the OM to become buried. Regular testing of OM helps to pinpoint where it is building up throughout the profile and allow for a tailored management program.

From our extensive data collection from Organic Matter Profile and Golf Green Health Indexing testing, our general statistics are showing:
2020, 0-20mm: 1.9% - 16.6%, with an average of 6.2%.
2021, 0-20mm: 1.4% - 34.3%, with an average of 6.6%.
(Stats based on hundreds of greens from all types of venues, ages of greens, seed-types and constructions).
The kits we have manufactured can be shipped worldwide, and are really effective at holding the cores intact until they are returned back to the laboratory. Our data collection is growing, thanks to those who participate. 👏👏

European Turfgrass Laboratories are also very pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Campbell, who joined us last week. Laura is also a Graduate Technician with a degree in Environmental Science from Stirling University, same degree/uni as myself but many years apart 😂.

“I applied to work for ETL because of my love of science. After completing my 4th year dissertation I was looking for the opportunity to get back into the lab and doing what I love. Work at ETL incorporates many aspects of soil science which I covered as part of my degree, accompanied by the real world applications and procedures that I am learning in my new position.
In my spare time, I’m interested in swimming, kayaking, and all things outdoors, I like to go hillwalking or down to the loch for a paddle. I get to do all these hobbies and more with my guide and scout groups which are a big part of my life and which I find enjoyable”.

Laura, we are so pleased to have you join our team, and look forward to helping you develop your lab skills and much more.

What a year it’s been for ETL, and due to great demand the team has expanded. I’d like to welcome one of our new recruits, Laura Beattie, who joins as a Graduate Technician. Training is intense right now, and Laura is already showing her aptitude for laboratory work.
Here’s a few words from the lady herself.

“I joined ETL this year, 2021, after graduating with an honours degree in Plant Sciences from Dundee University. Since high school I have enjoyed lab-based and having the opportunity to work in one so close to where I grew up feels like a dream come true. I am enjoying my place here at ETL and have been made to feel welcome by all members of staff. I still have a lot to learn but I am eager to do so and will hopefully at some point in the future be as proficient as other members of the team.
When not working I enjoy staying at home where I spend time doing puzzles and reading. I also am trying to keep my succulent alive which is so far going well, maybe not thriving but not dead either. I also enjoy playing with my new puppy dog and, hopefully soon, I’ll be able to take her on nice long walks which we should both enjoy.”

Welcome to ETL team Laura, the Sportsturf industry is a great sector to be involved in!
