Hi all,

Just a quick one — apologies if I’m a bit slow replying over the next couple of weeks.

If you need anything Bear House related, Adam is your man. The inbox has been redirected, so he’ll be keeping things ticking over (be kind to him… he’s doing his best 😅).

And no, it’s not anything as dramatic as Adam splitting his head open, nor anything as glamorous as a tummy tuck (still holding out hope for that one 🤞), but it will have me benched for a couple of weeks.

I’ll be back soon — slightly refurbished and ready to go… hopefully.

Thanks for bearing with me,
Lily

Right lads and lass’, need a quick one — what we saying on this?

Had to strip a section of ridge back while doing some leadwork on a chimney to get to the saddle.

Soon as I got up there I could see the dry ridge is a bit of a bodge…
• Not properly clipped/pinched together
• Side bits have been cut off
• Hardly looks like it’s been screwed down properly

Tiles are heavy enough but there’s way too much movement for my liking — feels wobbly rather than solid.

Am I right in thinking that’s not acceptable, or is it one of those “it’ll probably be alright” jobs?

Would you lot be stripping and redoing it or leaving it alone? Customer has asked me her thoughts and I don’t want to seem over dramatic, but personally I worry about wind uplift and that these will loosen even more over time…

Advice please 🙏🏻🙏🏻

This old fella in Salisbury has been given a new lease of life 🍃🪾

The team removed the existing lead flashing and replaced it with new code 4 lead flashings, including a new skirt and saddle to ensure long-term durability and proper weathering ☀️☔️

The flaunch had seen better days, so the old material was carefully removed and a new, smooth flaunch was laid to protect the chimney pot and improve water run-off.

We also repointed sections of the chimney and flashing where required, leaving everything watertight and ready to stand the test of time 🧱

West Tytherley job… and this one kept us busy 😅

The ridge line had completely crumbled, so we ended up replacing all the ridge tiles.

They’d been absolutely buried in cement — which made getting them off and cleaned up a proper pain in the bum.

But… worth it.
Lovely clean finish with all new ridge tiles and a solid, watertight result 👌

Allington – One of those jobs… 👀

Worked for a lovely family in Allington yesterday — but this one was a bit of a horror show once we opened it up.

The existing “coping stones” were actually paving slabs, which had blown due to the balustrade being fixed through them.
Underneath… a mix of mastic, spacers, easy grout (instead of cement), and even expanding foam to try and hold everything together.

Unfortunately, it hadn’t worked.

We also found:
• Soaked chipboard
• Insect activity underneath
• Balustrade fixed into the cavity rather than anything structural

We stripped everything back to create a proper base and did it the right way:

🔨 Removed slabs and failed materials
🪵 Installed new structural timbers
🧱 Prepared a clean, level base
📏 Installed Code 4 lead (1.2m lengths, correctly overlapped) to seal the parapet wall

This now gives a solid, watertight foundation ready for new coping stones — something the roof can actually be proud of.

Sometimes it’s not about patching… it’s about putting it right properly.

Dry Ridge Installation – Crowthorne

Completed this dry ridge installation last week for a returning customer — and what a day to finish it on ☀️

We removed all original ridge tiles and supplied and installed a new dry ridge system, ensuring the roof is secure, ventilated and fully watertight for years to come.

Always great to be back working for repeat clients — it means a lot.

Once upon a time… many moons ago 🌙… Checkatrade asked us for a photoshoot 😏

Back then, it was a brilliant platform for getting our name out there, building trust, and finding our feet in the early days of Bear House Build 🐻🏠

Fast forward to now, and we’re proud to say all of our work comes purely from word of mouth 😉
That’s been a journey — not an easy one, but a rewarding one.

Long days, early mornings, plenty of lessons… and a lot of graft to get here💪🏼

But none of it would have been possible without this thunder-stealing ⚡️, handsome fella.

So here he is… the smarmy git himself.
(Still annoyed how well these photos came out 😂)

Repointed a chimney over in Stockbridge for a lovely fella — and what a view to work with 👌

We quickly discovered a flaunch on top of a flaunch situation… so it all had to come off.
Stripped it back properly and laid a fresh new flaunch, finally letting those chimney pots breathe (and enjoy the view instead of being buried in cement!).

Lovely job… very uncomfortable ridge line though 😬🙈

Now it’s warming back up, the terrible twosome will be coming back to work with us 😬🙈

Roofing reality in Wokingham today…

Jumped in to help Adam install a layered felt flat roof system, and honestly every curve ball possible showed up.

• Downpipe running through the roof
• Securing all the ply to the joists before we started
• Boards tight against the wall under the fascia of the existing house 🙈💀
• Structure built right alongside it making drip fixing… interesting

One of those jobs where nothing is quite straightforward and you just have to adapt as you go.

Working with a torch system also means heat, and with the fascia sitting so close to the roof edge we did slightly catch it while detailing the edge. These things happen on tight jobs, so we’ll be popping back to replace that fascia with a new piece.

But even after a w***y handover of a day, I still love the finish of a felt roof over rubber.

And I know this will start the chins wagging…
…but I fking hate rubber roofs.

🐻🔨

Roofers… am I alone here, or is felt still king? 👀
