What counts as an electrical emergency?

Warning signs such as burning smells, smoke, visible flames, thermal damage or sparking should never be ignored. Where it’s safe to do so, isolate the affected circuit or electrical supply and contact a qualified electrician straight away.

Other issues, such as a lighting circuit failing, may be able to wait until the following morning once the supply has been safely isolated.

The key point is simple: if you’re unsure whether an electrical fault is safe to leave, seek professional advice.
