Another eye-opening job for our Facebook followers.

Once we started stripping this old slate roof, the true condition underneath became clear. From the outside, you could see slipped, broken and heavily repaired slates — but underneath was far worse.

There is no proper roofing membrane/felt, the old battens are heavily deteriorated, sections of timber are rotten and damaged, there are open holes straight into the property, poor previous repairs, foam used where proper roofing work should have been carried out, and nails/fixings that have been left in a dangerous condition.

This is exactly why repeatedly patching an old roof can eventually become false economy. Water gets through the slates and, without a proper secondary membrane, it can get straight into the roof structure. Over years, that moisture can attack the battens and structural timbers until the damage becomes much more extensive.

A&E Roofing Limited will now completely transform this roof. We’ll strip it properly, assess and replace defective structural timber where required, install the correct breathable membrane, new treated battens, correct leadwork and detailing, and rebuild the roof properly with everything it needs for long-term protection.

No covering problems up. No expanding foam and hoping for the best. We expose the problem, put the structure right and build the roof back properly.

Back on this one this week and it’s a proper transformation. 🏚️➡️🏠

We’re stripping everything right back and starting again from scratch — complete new joinery, brand-new roof structure and everything rebuilt properly to current Building Regulations.

The old purlins are basically full tree trunks, showing just how old this building really is. Amazing character and history, but now it’s time to bring it back to life with a completely new structure built to last for generations. 🔨🪵

Can’t wait to show the finished result.

🏠 ANOTHER ORIGINAL SLATE ROOF BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE 🏠

Massive well done to Kia Walsh, Danny, Bailey and the rest of the A&E Roofing team. 👏🔨

What an amazing turnaround on this property — and most importantly, another customer smiling again and proud of his home.

We first met this gentleman when we completed the roof next door for one of our landlords. Straight away, you could tell he was a genuine, hardworking man. He has spent his own working life in the joinery trade, so he knows what good workmanship should look like.

Unfortunately, over the years he’d had far too many people attempt repairs on this roof. Money had been taken, repairs had failed, people hadn’t returned, and underneath it all we found problem after problem.

❌ No proper felt beneath sections of the slate roof
❌ Numerous broken and damaged slates
❌ Poor previous repairs
❌ Faults that had simply been covered over
❌ Money spent without the problems ever being properly resolved

We wanted to do things differently.

Instead of trying to talk him into changing the character of his home, we’ve worked hard to retain and restore his beautiful original slate roof, while upgrading everything necessary underneath and adding all the modern extras required to give him a roof he can finally have confidence in.

Seeing how grateful he is for what we’ve done for him makes jobs like this worthwhile. ❤️

He’s finally smiling again, loving the transformation and seeing his original slate roof brought back to the standard it deserves.
