Repair of one of the key stones on the garden side of the house

It came crashing down a few years ago and split in two, could have been dangerous

Didn’t realise it was holding up the five huge slabs of stone until we got the scaffolding up when we renewed the roof

Had to drill two holes in each slab and fix a metal rod through them and into the brick below to secure them and take the weight off the key stone

We then drilled the key stone and fitted two rods through it to secure it

But it’s getting there. Been hampered by the weather

So far no real issues and the roofers are making good progress and should have it completed in 2 weeks

Then we can put up the cast iron guttering

This is the gravestone of Thomas Austin Jnr who is the son of Thomas Austin whom our house was built for back in 1845

The gravestone is located in St Cuthberts church right next to the house

He introduced 24 breeding rabbits on his estate in Australia in October 1859 as game for shooting parties and while his efforts were praised at the time, he has borne the brunt of blame for introducing this pest to Australia and has a poor reputation because of it
