A routine EV charger install…Or so we thought. 👀

The job started like any other, clean wall, straightforward setup, good access.

Then I took the old unit off…

No silicone. No sealant. No drainage hole.

Just a junction box that had been slowly filling with water.

Behind a live EV charger connection. ☔️
💧 + ⚡ = 💥

Rusted terminals. Degraded connections. No RCD protection in place.

This wasn't just a bad install. This was a serious accident that hadn't happened yet.

This is something most people don't find out until they've already bought one — and then they're starting from scratch.

Here's what you actually need to know.

By law, every home EV charger installed in the UK must be a smart charger. That's not my rule. That's the government's.

A smart charger means:
→ You can schedule charging times
→ You can control it from your phone
→ You can take advantage of smart tariffs like Octopus Energy — which can cut your charging costs significantly
→ You don't need to be in the same room to manage it

Tethered or untethered. Budget or premium. There are options at every price point — but they all need to meet the same standard.

Your EV charger won't save you money overnight…but here's how to make sure it does 👇

If you're on the Octopus tariff, charging between 12–6am puts you on the lowest rate of the day.

Plug in before bed. Wake up to a full charge. Spend nothing at a public charger.

It's not instant. But it's consistent, and that adds up!
