Summer fruit tree pruning today in beautiful kitchen garden for a local pub. Pruning at the correct time helps the fruit ripen, reduces the risk of disease and will maintain the shape. Today every tree is a bit different, keeping me busy working out the best approach.

When people talk about ‘doing something for nature’ the single biggest difference you can make in your garden is to reduce mowing. After ditching the chemicals.
is a great start. You may not have orchids popping up, but you will see loads more colour and life by simply parking up the mower.

Weekend in Snowdonia and a visit to Bodnant gardens didn’t disappoint. Having pruned some Laburnum at Barnsley House I’ve always wanted to see the famous Bodnant arch. Fantastic Erythronium. American skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus) a new one to me and as I suspected an invasive plant in many places.

The first of a few site visits today, some really lovely gardens interested in working together. A nice lunch break at home and time to appreciate the Narcissus ‘Minnow’ looking great, these will be planted out at the end of the season to spread in my garden beds.

Winter improvements at my own allotment. Creating wood chip paths around the no dig beds. Replacing some raised bed edging, in true allotment fashion this mostly upcycled. Increasing numbers of slow worms that never fail to make me smile. Plus plenty of sheltering from the wet wet winter.

Recent work in progress shots of a garden I’ve worked on. Lots of rose pruning and untangling of Wisteria initially. Followed by mulching of the heavy clay soil with a partly rotted wood chip. I then planted some screening shrubs to break up the fence line.
