A rare opportunity has come up to get into bed!

A raised bed at the Sensory Garden in Stratford Park is now available. You can use it for something else, such as growing flowers for cutting, if you prefer.

We welcome applications from charities and community groups.

It’s National Allotment Week! Here is our morning haul from the allotment. We’ve got beans, courgettes and cucumbers coming in thick and fast. It’s been a challenging year on the plot which makes each harvest even more special! How is it going on your plot?

The purple speckled French beans are a heirloom variety called Major Cooks climbing beans and have the best flavour Ive ever tasted in a bean. Even when they are a bit bigger with beans forming inside. Unfortunately, they do go green when cooked but the purple makes them easier to harvest.

The courgettes are Croockneck (yellow) and Genovese (pale green) are chosen explicitly for flavour. Both are mild, sweet and pack with taste.

The cucumbers are both very flavourful as well although I can’t remember the variety. The ridge one however, if not picked early gets incredibly bitter at the top.

One of the biggest joys of having our allotment is growing unusual varieties that bring so much flavour to the table.

Ever listen to the sick beats of rhubarb growing in the dark? Forced rhubarb, which is made to mature in near total darkness, grows at such an alarming rate—as much as an inch a day—that it actually makes squeaks, creaks, and pops as it gets bigger. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/forced-rhubarb-makes-sound

The technique makes for sweeter rhubarb, growers say, as well as a percussive, chaotic rhythm.

Please enjoy this kaleidoscopic tart to the smooth sounds of rhubarb snapping & crackling on SoundCloud: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/forced-rhubarb-makes-sound
