A fire door does more than stop fire.
Most people understand the basic purpose of a fire door, but there are several important functions that are often overlooked.
Containing fire:
Fire doors are designed to resist the spread of fire for a specified period, helping to contain it within one area of a building.
Restricting smoke:
Where smoke control is required, correctly specified seals can help restrict the passage of smoke into adjoining areas and protected routes.
Protecting escape routes:
Fire doors play an important role in protecting corridors, stairwells and other escape routes, giving occupants valuable time to leave the building safely.
Maintaining compartmentation:
A fire door forms part of the building’s wider passive fire protection system. If it is damaged, incorrectly installed or unable to close properly, that compartmentation can be compromised.
Supporting emergency response:
By helping to contain fire and smoke, fire doors can also support safer access and movement for emergency services.
And importantly, it isn’t just the door itself that matters.
