Valentine’s Day makes us think of roses… but why enjoy them for just one day? 🌹

These are two of my favourites: the beautiful pink ‘The Ancient Mariner’ and the warm apricot-orange Rosa ‘Lady of Shalott’. Both can be planted as bare root at this time of year while roses are dormant. They thrive in clay soil, grow fantastically, and produce stunning, almost peony-like blooms.

Hi, I’m Rory Wyndham-Smith, founder of Wyndham-Smith Bespoke Garden Design.
I’ve always believed that every garden has the potential to be both beautiful and functional, a space that truly enhances how we live. My journey started as a passionate gardener, and over the years, it’s grown into a career I absolutely love.
After studying Horticulture with Plantsmanship at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh and earning a degree in Garden & Greenspace Design from SRUC, I spent 8 years as an in-house designer at a leading practice before starting my own studio.
Now, through Wyndham-Smith Garden Design, I get to create bespoke outdoor spaces that are elegant, modern, and deeply personal turning challenges into opportunities for creativity and innovation.
What drives me most is knowing that my designs can genuinely transform how people experience their homes. Seeing a client’s dream garden come to life never gets old.
At the heart of what I do is a balance of excellence, creativity, sustainability, and individuality every project is a chance to bring those values to life.

What a difference a year makes !
The planting is now well established, bringing the garden to life with a strong focus on textural foliage, complemented by subtle floral highlights. Mass planting in generous groups of the same species enhances the clean, contemporary style of this modern garden. 🌿🌱🌻
