⚠️ We talk about site safety every day, but a silent danger in our industry needs just as much attention.
Over the past decade, an estimated 7,000 construction workers have died by su***de. 💔
Behind counters, yards, delivery roads and sites, too many people carry things no one else can see.
Long hours, physical strain, financial pressure and isolation are taking a heavy toll.
💚 In England and Wales, 355 skilled construction workers died by su***de in 2024, compared to 25 physical site fatalities in 2025.
💚 The estimated UK construction su***de rate is 29.1 per 100,000, more than three times the 9.6 national average.
💚 Wales' su***de rate is 15.7 per 100,000 (vs England's 11.1), doubling in deprived areas.
💚 436 su***des were registered in Wales in 2024, 50 more than 2023. Men made up 77% of lives lost.
💚 ONS occupation data shows su***de rates are 85% higher for male forklift drivers, 25% higher for van drivers and 20% higher for LGV drivers.
💚 CIOB research found 94% of construction workers experienced stress, 83% anxiety, 60% depression, and over a quarter had experienced suicidal thoughts in the past year.
💚 Fewer than 13% of construction firms have provided mental health awareness training in the last two years, with only 56% saying they have a mental health policy in place.
💚 Work-related stress, depression and anxiety costs UK employers £51-56 billion a year, with 22.1 million working days lost accounting for 52% of all work-related ill health.

Samaritans research found 60% of people had suicidal thoughts interrupted simply because someone asked how they were doing.
