Completed Aico Expert Installer training last week.

In my opinion the best fire and smoke alarms for domestic installations. Wide range of high quality and most importantly reliable products.

The training was great and picked up a few things I didn't know, always good to improve your knowledge.

Google 5 star review received after a recent Ohme Home Pro installation in Royal Wootton Bassett.
Ohme EV charge points connect to the mobile network, avoiding problems with wifi connections that others suffer from some times. It also integrates with the Octopus Intelligent energy tariff, one of the most cost effective EV charging tariffs available at the moment.

Installed this new and very modern looking light switch for Martin in Royal Wootton Bassett last week.

The switch is from a UK company called Trendi based in Sussex. They have a good collection of accessories in a wide range of colours. The switch felt well made and I haven't found many reviews on them, which normally means the product is reliable.

Available from Tool Station, TLC, B&Q etc.

At Newcroft Electrics we would be more than happy to supply and install them.

Exciting News for Newcroft Electrics.

As part of our work to grow and improve the business we launched a new website last week. Hopefully the new design is easier to navigate and it certainly gives us a better structure to provide more informative and helpful content.

Hypervolt have just announced that they are partnering with Enphase Energy to provide a much more integrated and functional combined solar and EV charging platform.

Many will know Hypervolt as the UK based EV charger manufacturer.

Fewer will know the name Enphase. They are actually a large company based out of California with from what I can understand over $2 billion in annual sales, focused on hardware and software solutions for the solar market. But looks like they only started to put significant efforts in to the UK solar market last year.

Flavian at Hypervolt has said that the collaboration will enable the two companies to offer a combined solar, battery and EV charging solution along with integration with OVO, Octopus and other energy suppliers. (my summary)

Hopefully with the resources of the much larger Enphase this will be achieved much more quickly and predictably than some of the Hypervolt features, I doubt Enphase would have approved the press release unless they were confident of a fairly quick delivery.

It's great for Hypervolt to have this partnership to accelerate their development and to my mind at least it makes a lot of sense to accelerate Enphase's entrance to the UK market. Presumably Hypervolt would love to get in to the US market as well and maybe get acquired in the long term.

Overall I think this will be good for Hypervolt customers now and in the future, plus also accelerate development of technology in the UK solar/EV market.

Up to 600 more Electric Vehicle Charge Points coming to Swindon.

Swindon have just won a £2.3m grant to enable the installation of up to 600 new public charge points, which will massively increase the availability of charge locations in the Town.

According to Charge finder there are currently 32 charging stations in Swindon, assuming 5 chargers per station, that’s a total of 160 chargers, with very few near areas where people don’t have off street parking.

According to Councillor Chris Watts the project will go out to tender this summer with target completion early 2025, which sounds quite quick to me. With many on street chargers making it easier
Apparently the council wants to put most of the chargers in residential streets, meaning that many more people will be able to charge their car close to home.

The challenge for adoption for many will still be the cost of public charging compared to home charging. Financially in many cases EV’s only make sense if you can take advantage of much lower cost home charging.

If you live in a home without off street parking it’s very hard to connect your car without causing a trip hazard. There are now solutions to run the charge cable in a gully across the pavement and the government is offering a £350 grant to help install them. But so far very few have been installed and councils are reluctant to approve the installations.

Personally I think that enabling private on street charging is the big change we need to increase EV adoption inside Towns and Cities, but providing more public charge points is certainly going to help.

Could your electric blanket cause a fire.

With the recent increases in energy costs many people are using electric blankets to keep warm so that they can turn the heating down. This is a sensible move and the products are safe if used sensibly and maintained.

But it's worth being aware that fires from electric blankets increased by 38% last year to 39. Not many unless you are the one with the fire:

Do buy from a reputable retailer and not an unknown supplier on ebay.

Don't go to sleep with the blanket on or buy one with a timer.

If the blanket blows a plug fuse or trips a circuit breaker get it checked before using it again.

Check the blanket every months for frayed wires and brown burnt patches

If unsure ask a professional to check it

Probably worth replacing about every 10 years as the blanket will have started to deteriorate with regular use.
