We have had ALOT of enquiries for apprenticeships this week, which is brilliant and lovely that so many young adults are wanting to join the industry.
This year (September's intake) we are not planning on taking on another apprentice, this is so we can continue to support our current apprentices through their next year's training.
We would like to take this opportunity to give some advice for future applications wishing to apply for apprenticeships
1) The main one, is call/message the employer YOURSELF ! Although it's lovely to speak to your Gran, Grandad, mum, Dad, uncle - it is you that needs the job/apprenticeship and YOU need to be ringing around yourself.
2) Sell yourself! For every apprenticeship there's about 30 or so people applying, what can you offer, what are you doing now, why should you get an interview over someone else?
3) make yourself known, pop by, go into the electrical wholesalers, put you requests on Facebook yourself - not Granny! And ask ask ask
4) If the employer says no, ask for advice - do you know what qualifications you will require to get on the course?
5) Facebook - make your Facebook employer friendly, if you have put it out there that you wish to have an apprenticeship- change your profile from your gangster style pose to a more friendlier one! Photos of dogs/cats always work!
6) once you have left your cv be prepared for a phone call! Answer in your best phone voice- rather than your just got up at 3pm!
7) speak to the college as they may know of employeers that are recruiting
And lastly 8) offer yourself for free work experience- this will very often get your foot in the door and the very least a reference.
Good luck to everyone looking & feel free to contact Hickmans if you require any advice
