🌳How the Dry Summer Could Be Affecting Your Trees
After the prolonged dry weather we’ve experienced this summer, many trees may be showing signs of stress — even if they still look healthy at first glance.
Trees rely heavily on moisture in the soil to support their root systems, foliage and overall structure. During extended periods of hot, dry weather, the ground can become extremely dry and compacted, placing additional pressure on trees, particularly younger trees, newly planted trees, older specimens and trees that were already weakened or damaged.
Some signs you may notice include:
• Leaves turning brown, yellow or dropping earlier than usual
• Smaller or fewer leaves
• Wilting or thinning canopies
• Dead or dying branches
• Cracking or unusually dry soil around the base
• Previously healthy trees beginning to decline
In some cases, drought stress can also make a tree more vulnerable to pests, disease and branch failure. It doesn’t necessarily mean that a tree is dangerous or needs to be removed, but it does mean it is worth keeping an eye on any noticeable changes.
Another consideration is that the effects of drought are not always immediate. A tree may continue to show signs of stress in the months ahead, particularly as we move into autumn and winter and experience stronger winds and wetter ground conditions.
If you have mature trees close to your home, driveway, road, footpath or public area, now is a sensible time to have a look at their general condition. If you notice dead branches, significant changes in the canopy, cracks, movement or anything you are unsure about, having the tree professionally inspected can provide reassurance and identify any work that may be beneficial.
At Bulley’s Ground Maintenance Ltd, we can provide professional tree inspections and surveys as well as pruning, deadwood removal, reductions and other remedial tree works where required.
The aim isn’t to remove trees unnecessarily — it’s to help keep trees healthy, retain them wherever possible and identify potential problems before they develop.
