When discussing investment in sports facilities, the conversation often starts with cost. But, the more important question is often:

What is the cost of doing nothing?

In many cases, sports surfaces provide warning signs long before performance begins to suffer.

Here are five indicators worth keeping an eye on, especially when autumn and winter hits:
1. Water remains on the surface long after rainfall
2. Areas of uneven wear are becoming more noticeable
3. Surface levels appear inconsistent
4. Usage restrictions are becoming more frequent
5. Maintenance requirements are increasing year after year

Identifying issues early often provides more options and greater flexibility when planning future maintenance or improvement works.

For many schools, September marks a significant increase in sports facility usage with the expected PE lessons and extracurricular activities. But also, for many, community and club use. All of this means surfaces can quickly experience increased wear and tear.

Now that the new academic year is approaching fast, it may be worth considering:

1. Expected levels of usage
2. Surface condition
3. Drainage performance
4. Maintenance schedules
5. Long-term investment requirements

A proactive approach now can help prevent unexpected issues later in the year when facilities are under greater pressure and weather conditions become less predictable.

Every year, sports facilities across the UK face disruption during the winter months, and while the weather often gets the blame, the underlying causes are usually more complex.

Common issues include:

1. Inadequate drainage
2. Compacted surfaces
3. Poor water movement across the site
4. Ageing infrastructure
5. Increased levels of usage

Many of these challenges can be identified and addressed well before the first frosts arrive.

This means early inspections and preventative maintenance will extend playing availability throughout autumn and winter, helping schools, clubs and communities maximise the value of their facilities.

Winter resilience isn't built in November. It's planned in August.

Project Update | Babington House School

Works are progressing well at Babington House School, where we're replacing the existing carpet on the school's netball and basketball court, together with new perimeter pin kerbs.

Once complete, the facility will provide a refreshed playing surface for pupils to enjoy for years to come.

With the sun still here, and parts of the UK still hitting the mid 30s, it may seem strange to be talking about winter.

However, the facilities that perform best during the wettest months are often those that were prepared months in advance.

Drainage issues rarely appear overnight. Poor surface water management, compacted ground conditions and ageing infrastructure can gradually reduce the usability of sports facilities, often becoming apparent only when demand is at its highest.

Whether you're responsible for a school, sports club or community facility, now is a good time to assess:

1. Surface water drainage performance
2. Areas prone to standing water
3. Existing drainage infrastructure
4. Maintenance requirements before autumn use increases

We've broken ground at Sarum Academy to deliver a new full-size artificial hockey pitch for Morgan Sindall.

The project is now underway, with the platform currently being prepared ahead of the pitch construction phase.
