Earlier this week, I attended a callout for a consumer unit with loss of Power.
I arrived at the property to discover it was the old wylex rewireable fuse type. Multiple fuses melted and cable melted. I stripped back the cable, re terminating them in the carrier. There was also a lighting fault of 0.01 neutral to earth on upstairs lights. As it was a non rcd board it had no way of physically tripping so has been present for many years. Being 8pm I had no spare fuses on the van, so done a tempory fix to get the customer out of a sticky situation by using a lighting 5a fuse with a 30a wire to restore power to the sockets. I left the upstairs lights disconnected for 48 hours until I could return.
I have now been back to replace the consumer unit for a Fusebox Inc rcbo unit with spd. I also upgraded the tails and main cpc plus run a new earth bond to the gas meter in conduit external to the property.
Once this was in I focused on the lighting fault. Splitting the loop system in the middle bedroom, I could determine which way the fault was running. After a few more tests I found the fault in the bathroom.....earth's connected directly into the neutral block in black sleeving 🙈
Now all compelte with a fault free installation 😎
