While ascending a Willow tree today to carry out some work, we made an incredible discovery tucked away inside a hollow of the trunk — two Tawny Owl chicks staring back at us! Naturally, all work was stopped immediately and we’ll be returning once they’ve safely fledged and left the nest.

Inside the hollow was quite the scene… along with the two fluffy chicks were several dead mice, clearly today’s dinner delivery from the parents! Tawny Owls are incredible hunters and mostly feed on small mammals like mice and voles, which they swallow whole. Later on they regurgitate the bones and fur as pellets — a bit gross, but fascinating! 🐭

A few fun facts about Tawny Owls:

🦉 They’re the most common owl in the UK, but you rarely see them because they’re strictly nocturnal.
🦉 Their classic “twit-twoo” call actually comes from two different owls — the female makes the “twit” and the male replies with the “twoo”!
🦉 Tawny Owl chicks often leave the nest before they can properly fly, climbing around branches and nearby trees while their parents keep feeding them.
🦉 They have exceptional hearing, allowing them to hunt in almost complete darkness.

It’s always a privilege to witness wildlife like this while working. The safety of the chicks comes first, so we’ll leave them undisturbed and return once the young owls have fledged and moved on.

Nature always has a way of reminding us who was here first! 🌿🦉

We thought some of you may find this interesting to know. 🤔

🌳 Co-dominant stems in trees occur when two or more main stems of similar size grow from the same point on the trunk. This structure creates a weak union because the stems compete for dominance and often lack strong connective wood between them. As the stems grow, included bark can develop in the junction, further weakening the attachment and increasing the risk of splitting under wind, snow, or the weight of the canopy. Such failures can cause significant structural damage to the tree and pose safety hazards to nearby property or people. Regular pruning or structural support is often needed to reduce these risks. 🌳

A big job recently completed – we mechanically pollarded 25 mature poplar trees using the Merlo and grapple saw for safe and efficient removal.🌳
All arisings were processed on site with the whole tree chipper, with the woodchip being sent off for biomass energy ♻️ ⚡️💡— giving these trees a sustainable second life!

Here’s what Jenny had to say about her experience with us!! 👇

A recent large scale clearance of over 400 poplar trees. All felled to ground level, stumps ground out, reinstate the ground ready to be grass seeded and replanted with an avenue of lime trees. The poplar trees were 70+ years old, naturally coming to end of life with many showing major decay in the bases and becoming susceptible to storm damage posing a major risk of injury to the public.

We’ve been busy!

Busy harvesting some over mature Douglas fir and spruce.
Part of this woodland found itself victim to the latest storms with some of the trees landing on nearby property.
In preventative measure we were called in to remove the remaining trees which were in close proximity to property.
All timber was cut to a usable spec ready for a local sawmill. 🌲 🪵 🪚

This week with some careful lowering on rigging ropes we set about the challenge of removing this rather enormous Eucalyptus tree from our clients back garden.
It had simply out grown its space and needed removing for safety reasons.
