ATAP Portable Appliance Testing

Have a little pile of fails from this morning, and more added this afternoon.
There are the usual fails, wire damage being one but then these two lamps.

The have no rating plate, just bought from amazon, and are non-compliant.
Even though brand new they immediately fail the PAT test. They even contained fake fuses and are very poorly made.
Be careful what you buy online.
Check for a CE symbol

FAIL of the year!
Cheap imports often have illegal wiring but this has to top them all
-Fake fuse
-Illegal wiring
-Soldering wire on top of screw

Only half way through the day and already quite a few repairs done and have a pile of fails, with damaged wires and broken items.

Keeping Thirsk safe from electric fires ✔️

One of my fails this morning was a sauna plugged into an extension, since last year's test it has had a lot of use and both the extension and sauna plug had melted badly.

This shows the importance of the annual check and the need to be adding regularly checks to items that use a lot of power.

What a FAIL! A melted plug on a deep fat fryer. The customer commented that the fryer has been making a strange noise but was working. If you have an electrical appliance that is making a strange noise, don't ignore it, check it 👍

Today's worst fail is the reason why PAT testing is so important for your business.

We caught a heater and an extension before they caused a fire, in a place full of ammunition and fi****ms. Both the extension plug and heater plug where melted internally and beginning to melt externally also.
This is why annual PAT test are important and dangerous appliances get missed otherwise.

Cold weather reminder.

Do NOT plug space heaters into power strips or extension cords.

Plug space heaters directly into the wall outlet.

Powers strips are not designed to handle the high current flow required by a space heater and can overheat causing a fire.
