A long term project now drawings to a close. A very thorough renovation of a remarkable building which dates back in parts to 1158. The majority of the works were undoing modern era renovations and removing inappropriate materials for solid walled buildings which unfortunately most Architects, builders and property owners are not up to speed with best practice, the tide is turning but it’s a slow process!

Restored barn wall with hot mixed lime mortar. The wall was most likely limewashed historically but it does look great exposed and looks to be managing the weather just fine.

Evenings in the cottage kitchen. The oak floor is aging nicely and getting darker slowly, finished with oil it’s wearing and aging without looking damaged. The open shelves have worked well and save space and despite lots of advice not to have Carrara marble it is still in perfect condition

Our team has completed a meticulous repointing project on the front elevation, using hot mixed lime mortar to replace old cement in targeted areas, replicating the original mortar and penny roll detail. We also addressed the property's leaking gutters and drainage issues. It's been rewarding to enhance the beautiful facade of this building we've long admired.

Another chimney rebuild complete. The original chimney's cement render had cracked, leading to moisture accumulation and saturation of the internal masonry and rafter. This issue was compounded by condensation in the attic. The mortar and masonry had deteriorated significantly, necessitating a full rebuild. For the rebuild, we selected old clamp blend bricks from , using NHL 3.5 lime mortar. Additional features include a lead DPC, stepped flashing, stainless steel bars supporting the pots, and cowls ventilating redundant flues, mortared to prevent water ingress. The cap is composed of NHL 5 and soft sand, allowing water to run off. The rebuilt chimney is designed to prevent water entry, facilitate airflow, and endure seasonal weather fluctuations.
