Hiring plant should make a job easier, not give you another thing to worry about.

When you bring in a paver, planer or support machine, you need to know it is going to arrive on site ready to work, with an operator who understands the job in front of them. Because when the kit isn’t prepared, communication is poor or support is slow, it’s usually the programme that ends up taking the hit.

For us, operated plant hire has always been about more than simply sending a machine to site. Our crews understand the realities of surfacing work, the levels, the joints, the pace of the shift and the fact that plans sometimes need to change once the job gets underway.

Behind them is our in house workshop team, keeping the fleet maintained and providing support when it’s needed. It’s one of those parts of plant hire that clients might not necessarily see, but it can make a big difference when you’re working to a tight programme.

With our core fleet based in the West Midlands and the ability to support projects nationally, we work alongside surfacing and civils contractors who need reliable operated plant without adding unnecessary complications to the job.

Sometimes good plant hire really is as simple as this: the right machine turns up, the operator knows what they’re doing, and you can get on with the job.

Texture depth might look like a small number on a test sheet, but on the road it can tell you a lot about the quality of the finished surface.

Get it wrong in either direction and it matters. A surface that is too tight can affect drainage and spray and raise concerns around skid performance. Too open, and you can be left with a surface that is more vulnerable to fretting, water ingress and premature deterioration.

The important part is that texture depth isn’t something you suddenly think about when the testing starts. The end result is influenced by decisions being made throughout the job.

It starts with good preparation, a clean, consistent planing pass and a sound surface to work from. From there, material choice, paving speed, machine set-up, weather and temperature, and the rolling pattern all have a part to play in achieving the right finish.

And that’s where experience on site really counts. Conditions don’t always behave exactly as expected, so having crews who understand the material, the plant and what the finished surface needs to achieve means adjustments can be made while the job is still live, rather than discovering an issue at handover.

At MAC Surfacing, having our own experienced crews, operated plant and workshop support means we’re able to look at the surfacing operation as a whole, rather than treating each stage in isolation.

Because when it comes to surfacing, some of the smallest measurements can have a surprisingly big impact on how a road performs long after the cones have gone.

RAP reuse starts with the planing pass, not at the asphalt plant.

If Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is going back into the process, the material has to be worth reusing.

That starts with a clean, controlled planing pass, getting the depth right, keeping materials sensibly segregated and avoiding unnecessary contamination.

For surfacing and civils contractors, operated planing hire should do more than simply remove the existing surface. It should help protect the programme too.

That means having the right plant for the job, experienced operators who can respond to what they find on site, and an in-house workshop behind the machines if the day doesn't quite go to plan.

RAP can support cost control, reduce waste and make better use of existing materials, but its value starts long before it reaches the asphalt plant.

It starts with the first cut.

From operated planing hire to supplying recycled planings, MAC Plane helps keep valuable material moving and working, rather than going to waste.

After weeks of heatwaves, sunshine and prolonged dry weather across the UK, worrying about standing water, drainage and winter surface damage might feel a little premature.

But actually, now can be a very good time to start thinking about it.The recent dry weather can make it easy to overlook the small warning signs already appearing across a surface, cracks beginning to form, worn areas, minor defects or drainage points that haven't really been put to the test for a while.

Then the weather changes. Rain finds its way into existing defects.

Temperatures eventually fall. And what looked like a relatively minor issue during the summer can become a much bigger maintenance problem.

For businesses, estates and commercial sites, late summer is a good opportunity to take a proper look at the condition of your surfaces before autumn and winter weather exposes the problems for you.

Are there cracks beginning to appear?
Are high-traffic areas showing signs of wear?
When the heavier rain arrives, will water drain as it should?
Could a relatively small repair now prevent a larger one later?

Good surface maintenance isn't only about fixing what's already failed. It's about spotting the early signs and planning ahead.

If you're responsible for a commercial site and you're unsure what condition your surface is in, the team at MAC Surfacing can assess it and advise on the most appropriate next steps.

Bigger kit is not always the better answer on a live site.

For schools, care homes, retail sites and service yards, the right paver width can make a real difference to disruption.

✔ Better fit for bays and roadways

✔ Cleaner tie ins where old meets new

✔ Less awkward handwork around kerbs and edges

✔ A method that keeps live access in mind

Good surfacing starts with the layout, not just the machine on the day.

If you are looking 6 to 12 months ahead, that is the right time to plan it properly.

It has been a little over a year since MAC Surfacing was awarded the Gold Defence employee recognition scheme award and we have not rested on our laurels.

In the last 12 months we have donated to our local Army cadet force detachment to help them buy supplies for the cadets, employed more veterans, raised money for Armed Forces charities including Fisher House, attended networking events with other like minded Armed Forces Covenant signatories and spoken to several companies about signing up or increasing their engagement with Defence.

Our Armed Forces champion, Stuart Currill, has been featured on the West Midlands RFCA website & was invited to be a table host at the employer engagement day at the prestigious Defence Academy, Shrivenham.

As we continue to move forward, we will not waver in our support of the Armed Forces family.

If anyone wants to know more about our journey or would like support on theirs, contact Stuart Currill - AISEP, AIIRSM to arrange a conversation.

Your car park is having a conversation with every customer.

Long before someone walks through your front door, they've already started forming an opinion about your business.

It doesn't matter whether they're visiting a hotel, a golf club, a retail park or a commercial premises.

Their experience starts the moment they arrive. A well maintained, clearly marked and professionally surfaced car park sends a message that your business takes pride in the details.

On the other hand, faded line markings, standing water, potholes and worn surfaces can create a very different first impression before a member of your team has even had the chance to say hello.

It's easy to think of resurfacing as a maintenance task. In reality, it's part of your customer experience.

For businesses, investing in external infrastructure isn't just about appearance. It's about safety, accessibility, protecting your reputation and creating an environment that reflects the standards your customers expect.

At MAC Surfacing, we understand that every project is about more than laying asphalt. It's about helping businesses create spaces that are safe, professional and built to perform for years to come.

What do you think? How much does a customer's first impression influence the way they perceive a business before they even walk through the door?

There's always something exciting about welcoming new additions to the fleet...

We're delighted to introduce two new Volvo FH 500 tandem axle drawbar trucks to MAC Surfacing.

When we invest in new vehicles, it's about much more than appearance. It's about making sure our team has modern, reliable equipment that supports safety, efficiency and the high standards we're proud to deliver on every project.

These new trucks have been carefully specified with features including:

✅ Volvo Engine Brake
✅ Crawler Gears
✅ Drive Extended Package
✅ Sleep & Resting Package
✅ Durabrights
✅ Lane Keeping Support

A huge thank you to the team at Spillard for fitting the advanced multi-camera systems, helping to further enhance visibility and safety, and to Thompsons for manufacturing the drawbar bodies and helping bring these fantastic vehicles together.

We're incredibly proud to see these trucks join the MAC fleet and can't wait to get them out on the road supporting projects across the region.

What do you think of the new additions?

Standing water tells you more about your car park than potholes do.

When drainage fails, surface damage follows. Resurfacing over a drainage problem just delays the next repair.

For schools, care homes, and commercial sites, spotting the root cause early saves repeated work and repeated cost.

MAC Surfacing looks at what's happening beneath the surface before anything gets laid. One contractor, one solution, done without disruption.

If your site's been patching the same spots, there's usually a reason. Happy to take a look if you'd like a second opinion.
