A little behind the scenes at Axe & Timber 🔨

This is what a lot of our projects look like somewhere in the middle. Timber everywhere, tools out and another frame starting to take shape.

Some parts of our builds are made here in the workshop, others are cut and constructed on site. It all depends on the project, the size of the building and what makes the most sense for the job.

What doesn’t change is the standard.

Every measurement, timber size, fixing and joint has a reason behind it. There’s a lot that goes into a bespoke timber building before the cladding goes on and you start to see the finished result coming together.

We share plenty of finished projects, but we think it’s important to show this side too. This is where the craftsmanship actually happens!

Swipe to see what we started with...🔍

A client near Uffculme came to us wanting to completely change this part of their garden. The existing space wasn’t giving them the privacy they wanted and there was an opportunity to make much better use of the area.

After talking through a few different options, we went with larch batten fencing with a tight gap between the boards. It gives plenty of privacy while still feeling much lighter and more contemporary than a solid fence.

We then added premium 200mm composite decking from Cladco Profiles®, creating a defined area for seating, entertaining and making much more use of the garden throughout the summer.

The difference between the before and after is pretty satisfying! What was previously an underused corner now feels private, finished and incredibly useful.

It’s also a great example of why we don’t just look at one element of a garden in isolation. Fencing, screening, decking and bespoke timberwork can all work together to completely change how you use the space.

A little further from home for this one... all the way to Bournemouth 🌊

We don’t often get the sea air on an Axe & Timber build, but we’ll happily travel for the right project!

This bespoke timber shed was built for a client who wanted a dry, practical space to work in, as well as somewhere for garden storage. His wife was probably just as pleased to reclaim a bit of space in the house too. 😉

Inside, there’s mains electricity, built-in workbenches and plenty of natural light, with everything planned around how the space will be used.

We also built the structure with the future in mind. The 4x2 treated timber studwork means it can be insulated and converted into a home office later if needed, while Douglas fir featheredge cladding gives the outside a durable, high-quality finish.

That’s one of the reasons we enjoy bespoke work so much. A shed doesn’t have to be limited to one purpose for its entire life. Think about what you need now, what you might need in five or ten years, and build accordingly.

Another project underway in Devon 🧱

The concrete pad is going in this week near Cullompton, ready for a new bespoke timber garage to start taking shape.

Always an exciting stage for us and the client when a project moves from plans to site.

It's been a hot one to get the groundworks done in though! Thankfully, there’s been plenty of shade from the trees!☀️🌳

ALWAYS the same standard 🔨

Not every bespoke project needs to be a garage or workshop. Sometimes you just need a decent set of steps!

These were made to measure for an existing timber building where something off the shelf simply wouldn’t have worked. Solid timber, substantial treads and built specifically to the height and width needed.

It might be a smaller job, but our approach doesn’t change. The same attention goes into the timber we choose, the fixings we use, the fit and the finished result, whether we’re building a set of steps or a full timber workshop.

That’s a big part of what bespoke means to us. We build what the space actually needs rather than trying to make a standard product fit.

The little details aren’t little to us (or to our clients) 🌲🔨

It’s the line of the fixings. The way two pieces of timber meet. The proportions of a frame. The overhang that keeps driving rain away from the cladding. The choice of timber for the job, and how that timber will look and perform years from now.

A lot of those details might not be the first thing you notice when you look at one of our finished buildings, but they’re a big part of why we build the way we do.

It’s also why we only offer bespoke work.

We don’t want to take one design and make it fit every property. A workshop storing electrics needs something different from a garage housing classic cars. A veranda attached to a traditional Devon home needs something different from a pergola framing a contemporary garden.
