It might not have been England’s week on the football pitch, but here in the office, we are celebrating what feels like our own World Cup win.

This week, we received planning permission for two new nursery and education settings, both within established residential areas and involving listed buildings.

At the heart of both projects is adaptive reuse, giving important existing buildings a new purpose while respecting their character, history and relationship with the surrounding community.

These were sensitive projects, and the initial concerns raised by planners required careful consideration. Through constructive discussion, close collaboration and a thoughtful design approach, we were able to respond successfully.

Securing one planning permission would have been a result worth celebrating, securing two in the same week feels like lifting the trophy.

A fantastic outcome for our clients, and a very proud week for the whole team.

We’re pleased to have secured planning permission for seven new homes on a challenging corner site on the edge of the Mercer Park Conservation Area in Clayton-le-Moors.

This prominent location called for a considered design approach. The layout has been carefully arranged to respond to the corner plot, frame views across Mercer Park and preserve the setting of the Grade I listed All Saints’ Church.

The choice of materials and the house typologies were key drivers throughout the design process, creating a development that sits comfortably within its historic surroundings whilst providing a distinctive and high-quality addition to the area.

Sensitive sites such as this demand more than simply achieving planning permission, they require a design that respects its context while making a positive contribution to it. We’re delighted to have helped deliver a scheme that achieves just that.

Work begins now on the construction stage and we're looking forward to sharing updates for this project over the coming months.

A significant milestone for the Hippodrome Theatre project.

Following handover last week, the Storah Architecture team spent an evening at the Hippodrome to watch a performance and, for the first time, experience the completed spaces in use.

After many months of design work, collaboration and construction, it was a pleasure to see the theatre welcoming audiences back and providing a fantastic setting for live performances.

Projects like this are always a team effort, and we’d like to thank our client, the contractors, consultants and everyone else involved in helping to bring the project this far. We are delighted to have played a part in this chapter of the Hippodrome Theatre.

An update from the Raise the Roof project: the cladding is now in place, scaffolding is coming down, and the windows are being installed.

We’ll soon have an uninterrupted view of the new cladding set against the Todmorden Hippodrome Theatre’s red brickwork and terracotta detailing.

It’s exciting to reach this stage of the project and see the dialogue between the building’s historic character and the contemporary extension come to life.

Richard, together with Mark Barrett of Barnsley College took the Georgian Group's national caseworkers on a tour of our recently completed conservation works at Wentworth Castle. They were pleased with our works commenting that they "were all extremely impressed... by the passion which you both clearly have for the place and the innovative solutions which you are working through and developing to keep it in repair and in continued use... whilst only having access to the very limited resources available from DfE"

It’s brilliant to see apprentices being celebrated this week.

At Storah Architecture, we’re equally proud to support the next generation coming into the profession.

This year, Alicia has joined us for her Part 1 placement following completion of her degree at the University of Manchester. A year in practice is such an important step in the education of a future Architect, bridging the gap between academic study and the realities of live projects, clients, and construction.

We’re also delighted to stay in touch with Polina, who is currently studying Architecture at the University of Salford whilst living in Todmorden. Following a work experience placement with us last year, she keeps in touch with us during her studies.

For us, time on site is invaluable. Being able to stand in a space, understand scale, watch how materials come together, and see the sequencing of construction first-hand is something that simply can’t be replicated in a studio environment. Drawings take on a different meaning when you’ve seen how they’re interpreted on site.

Work placements and apprenticeships aren’t just about experience, they’re about confidence, responsibility, and understanding how good design translates into buildable, practical solutions.

Supporting students and apprentices is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. It’s an investment in the future of the profession and in the quality of the built environment we all rely on.

Well done to everyone celebrating Apprentice Week

👷‍♂️🔨 It’s Apprentice Week – and we’re celebrating Will! 🔨👷‍♂️

As part of our Raise The Roof project, we’re lucky to be working alongside some fantastic people — including Will from Rosslee Construction, who is currently completing his Level 3 NVQ in Joinery.

Will has been hard at work on site, helping bring our new extension to life. From structural joinery to detailed finishing work, he’s playing a real part in shaping the future of the Hippodrome — and gaining valuable hands-on experience along the way.

Projects like Raise The Roof don’t just transform buildings — they create opportunities. Supporting apprentices like Will means investing in the next generation of skilled tradespeople, ensuring traditional craftsmanship and modern construction skills continue to thrive.

It’s brilliant to see young professionals developing their skills on such a landmark local project, and we’re proud that our redevelopment is helping provide that opportunity.

Thank you for being part of this exciting chapter in the Hippodrome’s story Will! 👏

We had a really enjoyable visit to the workshop of Touchstone Glazing in Brighouse this week.
We were treated to a tour of their workshop and showroom, and it was a pleasure to see the craft behind the finished product.

There’s something mesmerising about watching skilled hands at work and understanding the care that goes into each piece.
Laura and Alicia tried their hand at glass cutting and made easy work of it thanks to Liam's demonstration.

What particularly impressed us during discussions, was how their systems are helping to improve the energy efficiency of older properties, without compromising their character.

Sensitive upgrades that respect the heritage of listed buildings whilst quietly improving performance are exactly the sort of solutions we value.

We were also treated to a wonderful afternoon tea for which we are very grateful. Apologies for not getting to a slice of the homemade coffee cake.

Thank you to Liz and the team for the insight and generous hospitality.

A big thank you to Morgan and Jonathan for hosting us this week for an excellent CPD session on timber frame construction.

The presentation provided a really clear introduction to their approach to timber frame, alongside really helpful insight into current SAP challenges, the manufacturing process, and what to look out for during construction. Seeing the example wall assemblies and touring the demonstration suite brought the discussions to life and made the session especially worthwhile.

It’s easy to see why this training has been so well received. The balance between technical detail and practical, real-world application made for a highly engaging and informative morning, and the feedback from our team has been very positive.

Wishing you the best of luck in gaining the RIBA certification for the CPD. A really useful and well-run session, and one we’d happily recommend.

A lovely end to the week as site investigation works begin on the next phase of our John Eastwood Homes projects; two new canalside bungalows that will offer comfortable, characterful homes in this really special setting in Walsden.

And to round it off, Todmorden’s Christmas light switch-on lit up a very festive portal frame at the Hippodrome Theatre. A fitting start to December and a great welcome to the Christmas spirit!
