Brighton & Hove Expands Smoke Control Rules – What Burner Owners Need to Know
Brighton & Hove City Council has approved plans to replace its five existing Smoke Control Areas with a single larger Smoke Control Area covering most of the city’s built-up urban area. The change is aimed at reducing particulate pollution from domestic solid fuel burning.
What this means in practice:
🔥 Wood burners are not banned.
🔥 If you burn wood, your stove should be a DEFRA-approved (exempt) appliance.
🔥 Only authorised fuels can be used unless you’re burning in a DEFRA-approved appliance.
🔥 You must not produce persistent visible smoke from your chimney.
🔥 Open fires within Smoke Control Areas are generally restricted to authorised smokeless fuels.
🔥 Fines of up to £300 can be issued for smoke emissions that breach the rules.
For most modern stove owners who are burning properly seasoned wood (less than 20% moisture) in a DEFRA-approved appliance, very little changes day-to-day. The key remains the same as always:
✅ Burn dry fuel
✅ Use the correct appliance
✅ Have your chimney swept regularly
✅ Maintain good combustion and airflow
At Sweep Safe, we’ll continue helping householders stay safe, efficient and compliant while enjoying their stoves responsibly.
Have you checked whether your stove is DEFRA-approved?
