Heat Stress in Horses – Advice from Your Vet:

Horses can quickly become vulnerable to heat stress, especially during exercise, travel, or turnout with limited shade.

Unlike humans, horses generate a lot of internal heat when working and rely heavily on sweating to cool down. When conditions are hot and/or humid, that cooling system can become less effective.

Be aware the sudden increase in temperatures, whilst nice for us, may be a challenge for our horses - so consider reducing the level/intensity of horse exercise and avoid transporting your horse during the hottest hours where possible over the next few days.

Look out for indicators of heat stress: an excessively high heart rate, high respiratory rate, incoordination, shaking and excessive sweating. If untreated, this can progress to heat stroke, which is a veterinary emergency.
