James is an Architect, Managing Partner and founding member of the team here at Croft.

In his role as Architect he brings an aspiration to create designs bespoke to the clients’ personality. He is particularly inspired by the impact architecture has on the lives and wellbeing of the people using the spaces we design and facilitates an open dialogue throughout the project from the very early design stages. This inevitably leads to good working relationships with our clients.

An aptitude for carpentry led him to architecture but continues to inform the design process, with a thorough understanding of material choices, detailing and buildability in the context of our sustainability ethos.

He also oversees the practice management and manages the day-to-day operations of our studio. It is his delight in being able to put the necessary care and time into projects which instigated the setup of Croft.

Eve is an Architect, Partner and founding member of the team here at Croft.

In her role as Architect she brings a sensitivity and clarity to the design process, helping her to ground designs in the surrounding context. The level of rigour she brings to the design process is a real asset to the team.

Her interest in vernacular architecture sparked research into conservation and craftsmanship that lead to practical building experience on a range of projects using natural materials. She's also worked in conservation at a number of architecture practices so has an aptitude for sensitively adapting existing buildings to meet the needs of present-day and future users.

She's answered a few questions for us so you can get to know her a little better...

It's great to see the prefabricated timber frame for our Hillside project starting to come together by Broadaxe Timber Frames in the factory.

Hillside is a bespoke new home that uses a pre-fab building system to ensure the construction can be quickly assembled on-site with the necessary accuracy to help achieve a high quality build. This pre-fab timber frame system also offers a low carbon build solution with high levels of cellulose insulation by PYC Group and Warmcel Insulation and airtightness using pro clima and products.

We cant wait to see the timber frame installed on site by Firth Construction

Seasons Greetings from our team here at Croft 🎄

We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone we've worked with in 2025, wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year ✨

It's been a busy last few week of the year, so we're taking a festive break until our office re-opens on the 5th January when we look forward to some progressing some exciting projects.

Our River View Renovation project aims to revitalise an outdated, inefficient 1970s house, to create a wonderful, contemporary and highly sustainable family home. With these two concept design options we looked to address the lack of a main entrance to this existing house whilst reconfiguring and extending the property to suit modern living for the family.

The existing property presented some key design challenges. Firstly, the house was split across 4 levels, which created interesting spatial connections but led to a lack of basic functionality and legibility. The site has fantastic views over the river, but the existing property does not connect effectively to the environment around it.

We explored different spatial, aesthetic and functional scenarios using 3D modelling and visualisations to test ideas in discussions with the clients, as we worked towards a refined design proposal. With a considered design approach and close collaboration with our clients, we are looking forward to the revitalised property becoming a fantastic, unique, family home.

Prefabricated timber construction.

Carefully considering the method of construction is surprisingly key to defining how a building actually feels to live in. Not only does it help characterise your experience of the space, including the thermal performance and the comfort of the building, but it also impacts the wider sustainability of the project.

A prefabricated structure improves accuracy, speeds up the construction programme and gives the ability to foresee and coordinate the details of the building digitally prior to construction onsite. By manufacturing the superstructure in a controlled workshop environment, tolerances can be closely monitored and assembly sequences carefully controlled, reducing on-site rework and ensuring the build meets the design intent.

At Hill House, we have worked to coordinate the prefabricated timber panel superstructure with the fabulous team at Broadaxe Timber Frames

The superstructure comprises an I-joist timber frame panel system with recycled newspaper insulation (PYC Group and Warmcel Insulation) and MEDITE SMARTPLY airtightness products. This provides a very low-carbon construction, especially since, through careful coordination & structural engineering by Jengo Designs, no steel beams are required in the superstructure.

This video of our BIM model shows various elements of the on-site assembly which we’re looking forward to in the new year.
