At just 350 g/m², with high transparency, UV stability, and multi-layer thermal options down to ~1.2W/m²K, it enables domes, vaults, freeform surfaces, and long-span canopies with minimal structure.

For Stage 2, key feasibility checks include pillow sizing, pitch and drainage, aspect ratios, preliminary loads, and air-pressure strategy. ETFE excels in large-span atriums, transport hubs, stadiums, and biophilic environments where daylight and structural efficiency matter.

This week, we’re revisiting OVO Hydro - a standout Novum project and one of Scotland’s most recognisable venues.

Novum engineered, manufactured, and installed the ETFE Air‑Filled Pillow façade, working closely with Foster + Partners from the earliest design stages. Together, we developed a bespoke ETFE screen print that delivers controlled daylight to the foyer, manages solar gain, and ensures clear visibility for projected imagery at night.

Using our proprietary software, Novum precisely mapped the print pattern across 14,360 m² of ETFE foil. Every dot aligns seamlessly across welds and seams, creating a continuous, uninterrupted graphic across both 2‑ and 3‑layer pillows.

Novum partnered with Holder Mathias Architects to deliver the Serendome at Bluestone Resort in Wales - an all‑weather adventure space designed to feel like the outdoors under a “giant umbrella.”
__________

The structure combines our Kugel Knoten and Block Knoten spaceframe systems with a transparent 2‑layer Air Filled Pillow roof, creating a large, lightweight enclosure that maintains clarity and openness. Inside, the dome houses a full entertainment hub, including a 400‑seat amphitheatre and a vertical adventure course.
