What is the cost of doing nothing?

Not tomorrow.

Every day a young person goes without support is a day of missed opportunity.

A missed conversation.

A missed intervention.

A missed chance to change the direction of a life.

At Southern Oak, we believe strong communities are built on strong foundations. That's why we created the Southern Oak Community Fund and partnered with Media CIC to help provide mentoring, guidance and opportunities for young people who need them most.

The reality is simple.

If we do nothing, somebody eventually pays the price.

The young person.

Their family.

Their community.

I've shared an article exploring why early intervention matters, why prevention is so important, and why the cost of doing nothing is often far greater than the cost of helping.

Not every oak-framed building needs to follow the same formula.

This circular gazebo design shows what's possible when clients move away from conventional layouts and start exploring something a little different.

The beauty of bespoke oak framing is that you're not restricted by standard dimensions or typical footprints. Whether it's a garden structure, entertaining space, commercial feature, or something entirely unique, the design can be shaped around how the space will actually be used.

Round structures have a completely different presence. They create a natural focal point, offer views from every angle, and bring a sense of balance that traditional layouts often can't achieve.

For us, that's what bespoke design is all about. Creating buildings that feel as though they belong exactly where they're placed.

Big projects start long before the oak arrives on site.

Currently in the design phase for a bespoke 12m x 6m oak framed pergola for a commercial client. A structure of this scale isn’t just about appearance, it’s about balancing aesthetics, structural integrity, usability, and how the space will actually function day to day.

From the layout and oak frame specification through to roofing details and integration with the wider site, every element is being tailored specifically to the client’s requirements.

This is where bespoke design really matters.

At Southern Oak, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all structures. Every project is designed around the client, the setting, and the purpose behind the building.

Another milestone reached on our bespoke four-bay oak framed garage project in Wokingham, Berkshire.

All steel reinforcement is now in place and we’re ready for the concrete pour tomorrow, with the groundworks progressing really well on site by Surrey Groundworks & Civil Engineering Ltd

Next comes the brick plinth, which will form the base for the handcrafted oak frame currently moving through manufacture before installation on site in the coming weeks.

It’s always great seeing these projects move from drawings and groundwork into something tangible, especially when every stage is being tailored specifically around the client’s vision.

Still in the design stage, but this enclosed oak porch is already shaping up to be something special.

Featuring glazed side panels and our bespoke oak capping system, this design brings together traditional oak framing with a cleaner, more contemporary finish. The enclosed layout helps create a more practical entrance space while still keeping all the character and warmth that comes with a handcrafted oak frame.

Every project starts with a conversation and a concept. From there, we work closely with clients to develop something that feels completely in keeping with their home.

Another beautiful oak frame leaving the workshop.

This week, the team are heading to Kent to install this impressive 4-bay oak framed garage and workshop. Manufactured using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, this frame has been designed to provide both practical storage and a stunning addition to the property.

Projects like this showcase exactly why bespoke oak framing remains so popular. Timeless appearance, incredible structural strength, and built to last for generations.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week 2026.

The theme this year is action.

At Southern Oak, we know that even small actions can make a real difference, whether that’s checking in on someone, taking a break when needed, supporting a colleague, or simply making time to talk.

Construction and trade industries can be tough environments mentally, and conversations around mental health still don’t happen enough.

We’re proud to support Mental Health Awareness Week and encourage everyone to take one positive action this week, for yourself or for someone else.

Sometimes the smallest gesture can have the biggest impact.
