TOMATO TIME IS HERE!

For those of you lucky enough to own a greenhouse or conservatory, now is the time to buy tomato plants, ensuring an early crop!

We offer the following carefully-produced, strong and healthy plants, all priced at £1.95, or any 4 for £5.95. You can collect, or we deliver free in Wadebridge, cash on delivery.

• Moneymaker - the favourite of gardeners everywhere, a good crop of medium-sized fruits, with a great flavour.
• Gardener’s Delight - another favourite, easy to grow, giving great-tasting fruit, the size of a large cherry tomato.
• Pomodoro Ace - an Italian favourite, yielding a good crop, and full of flavour.
• Cuor di Beu - an Italian Beef tomato, yielding large, deliciously flavoured fruits.

For those of you wanting to grow tomatoes outdoors, you’ll need to wait until the danger of frost has passed, and the good news is that all the above mentioned plants are available. They will be an ideal size for outdoor planting, with strong stems and a healthy root structure.

If it’s all new to you, you can grow tomatoes in a container on a patio, preferably in a sunny, sheltered spot, or you can plant directly into ground prepared with added compost to aid healthy growth. If you prefer, you can use growbags instead, with 3 plants per bag, though it’s easier using a container, especially where the all-important watering is concerned! Also, as the plants grow, remember you will need some canes to support them.

Finally, Courgette plants will be available soon, but it’s a bit early yet - I’ll post details here, when they’re ready ….

Crop Rotation Chart

When you pull something up, you should put something in, with the exception of December and January, which are very lean months.

Yet we are not always the best at sowing outside of Spring. This list should help you make the most of your plot and below there's a crop rotation chart to help get the best out of your soil.

Many thanks to my friends at Franchi Seeds for letting me share this with you.

Lots you can do this month, weather permitting!

Let’s start with a clean-up: if you have a greenhouse, give it a total clean: you can eradicate any fungus spores that might remain from last year by using Jeyes Fluid to clean the glass. Whilst you’re at it, clean garden tools as well!

Clean all the pots that you plan to have this year for patio displays etc.

It’s now time to remove weeds from borders and then mulch using compost or bark, to help stop the weeds returning.

There’s a lot of indoor plant sowing to be done now, such as tomatoes, and towards the end of the month you can also indoor-sow celery, cucumber and if you’re brave, very early courgettes - but they can’t go outside until all danger of frost has passed - if in doubt, leave the sowing until the end of the month!

Lastly, if you’ve got a lawn, now is the time to start caring for it after the long winter. If it’s not too wet, mow once a week, with the cutting height set as high as possible, and gradually decrease the cutting height as the weeks of March and April pass by. Remember to take your time and not to physically overdo things - it’s meant to be an enjoyable activity!

SPEED THINGS UP WITH AN ELECTRIC PROPAGATOR ….

If you want to get ahead, and have more success growing plants from seed, then an electric propagator makes sense.

They don’t take up much room - the one illustrated here is about 17” by 9”, and costs around £18.00. There are 2 side by side trays in this model, allowing you to grow different plants without confusing them [or yourself!]. As with all seed planting, make sure you use a good quality seed compost, it really makes all the difference.

When the seeds germinate, allow them to develop their second set of leaves [which are the first ‘true’ leaves] and then you can carefully pot them on [without touching the delicate stems], and place them somewhere warm, such as a windowsill, for their next stage of growth.
