Barhale secures £12.5M tunnel inspection and maintenance programme.

Thames Water has appointed Barhale to deliver a £12.5M programme of statutory tunnel inspection and maintenance across key infrastructure including the Thames Water Ring Main (TWRM) and North London Abstraction and New River Zone raw water assets.

The projects, awarded under the AMP8 Tunnels and Aqueducts programme, will also include the production tunnels within Thames Water’s treatment works, bringing the total length of tunnels under inspection to almost 48 kilometres.

On the TWRM, civil engineering, infrastructure and tunnelling specialist Barhale will use mainly man entry with some limited Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) to inspect 12 sections of the tunnel at depths of up to 65m, representing around 20% of the asset’s extent.

At the North London Abstraction and New River Zone, Barhale will carry out 24 inspections concentrated around the Lee Valley reservoir complex. The varying diameter tunnels are buried up to 50m deep and range from 30m to 5,450m in length. The overall length to be inspected in the Lee Valley area is 24.9km.

ROV, CCTV and sonar surveys will be conducted where in person inspection of the tunnels is not possible.

The tunnels will be accessed from existing shafts. Works will be carried out under Confined Space Working conditions and will include clearing sludge, silt, stones and invasive species – particularly mussel concentrations which impact flows. It is estimated that 3,120 tonnes of waste will be removed.

Barhale awarded £16M Springhill service reservoir contract in Scarborough.

Barhale has been awarded a £16M contract by Yorkshire Water to deliver a new service reservoir (SRE) at Springhill, strengthening Scarborough’s long-term water resilience.

The four-year scheme, awarded as part of Yorkshire Water’s AMP8 programme to upgrade infrastructure, will safeguard water supplies for properties in and around the Yorkshire town.

Civil engineering, infrastructure and tunnelling specialist Barhale will construct a 17.3ML twin-compartment reinforced concrete service reservoir, to be known as Springhill SRE No.3, together with an associated valve house.

Johannes Esterhuyse, Regional Director – Yorkshire, Barhale, said: “This project is fundamental to securing long-term water resilience for Scarborough and the surrounding communities.

Strengthening the network: progress update at Mogden STW.

Barhale is proud to deliver essential upgrade works for Thames Water at the Mogden Sewage Treatment Works.

The project involves converting the existing Thames Water Ring Main (TWRM) inspection shaft into a new Pump Out Shaft (POS), ensuring that in the event of a failure at Hampton POS, the Mogden site would be able to supply the entire Hampton country zone to normal operating pressure.

The new system will provide a critical level of resilience within Thames Water’s network, supporting a reliable water supply across the region.

Significant progress has been made, with major milestones successfully achieved during 2025. The tunnelling works between the Mogden site and the Worton Road car park compound were completed, marking the end of a 176m tunnel drive using 120mm jacking pipes.

Following this, installation of the DN1000 steel E-joint pipework was carried out within the tunnel. The pipe, installed in 4m sections, was welded and progressed efficiently last Autumn, reaching completion on 20th October – two weeks ahead of schedule. The full 176m pipeline was then successfully pressure tested.

Subsequent works focused on the existing TWRM inspection shaft. Excavation of the 28m x 17m cofferdam commenced in late October 2025, preparing the area for the installation of the riser pipe. This riser connection linked the newly installed tunnel pipeline to the existing 33-inch trunk main. Riser installation works began in early November and progressed alongside the cofferdam excavation. Additional activities included backfilling of the reception shaft, installation of a concrete cover slab and reinstatement of the Worton road car park, which was returned to the owner in December 2025. The site is planned to be revisited in 2027 to complete the final connection into the existing 33-inch trunk main.

Congratulations to Rob Chattoe (Midlands Region) who has recently been promoted to Contracts Manager.

Rob joined Barhale in October 2023 as Project Manager and has been a key team member in Barhale's Midlands Region developing and delivering crucial projects for Severn Trent to boost the resilience of their network.

With a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Portsmouth, Rob has built a 25-year career progressing from Graduate Engineer to his current role, gaining broad experience.

Having worked on a wide range of projects, spanning most disciplines of civil engineering, he was drawn to Barhale by the opportunity to take on new challenges, particularly within our specialist shaft building and tunnelling works. Following periods of industry uncertainty and three instances of redundancy in two years, Rob made a conscious decision to join a business with a strong people-focused ethos and long-term stability. Barhale has provided the career security and progression he was seeking, both professionally and for his family.

Critical wastewater upgrade completed at Hythe.

Barhale has successfully delivered a complex pumping station upgrade for Southern Water, improving the resilience of essential wastewater infrastructure serving Hythe and nearby villages in Kent. Initially commissioned as an emergency scheme in September 2024 to improve the transfer of flows to full treatment (FFT) from Range Road Transfer Pumping Station, the project progressed into delivery of permanent works, which commenced in December 2024.

The scheme focused on upgrading assets at Range Road Pumping Station and West Hythe Wastewater Treatment Works (WTW), including the Transfer, Intermediate and Effluent Return Pumping Stations. Range Road Pumping Station plays a vital role in capturing incoming wastewater, removing sediment and transferring flows to West Hythe WTW. The works included replacement of pumps, renewal and modification of pumping station pipework and the design and installation of new low-harmonic variable speed drive motor control centres.

At the beginning of the project, Barhale encountered some difficult challenges and a new regulatory date of 31st March 2025, which was successfully achieved via emergency temporary and mitigation measures. These activities required rapid design development, procurement and installation. Temporary generators, pumps and bypass arrangements were implemented, together with an emergency variable speed drive solution, enabling the network to continue safely conveying the required flows while the permanent solutions were developed.

The project demonstrated Barhale’s ability to perform under challenging conditions, including one of the wettest winters in recent years. Through agile planning and a flexible delivery strategy, the team successfully managed prolonged periods of heavy rainfall, delivering key activities through carefully controlled overnight working windows.

Support for EDT Industrial Cadets programme continues.

We are proud to be in our third year of supporting the Engineering Development Trust’s (EDT) Industrial Cadets initiative. This year, we are supporting students at Queen Mary’s High School, Walsall in exploring opportunities in reducing carbon emissions in civil engineering by assessing the viability of a low‑carbon aggregate, ReCO₂, as an alternative to conventional MOT Type 1 material.

Based on the remit set by our mentors Danny Taberner (Temporary Works Design Engineer), Ian Hodgkiss (Engineering Manager), Owen Mills (Engineering Director) and Tim Withington (Engineering Manager), the students undertook a structured programme of research, comparing the composition, environmental impact and engineering performance of both materials. ReCO₂ is produced using accelerated carbonation technology, which captures carbon dioxide during manufacture, resulting in a material with a negative carbon footprint. In addition, its lower density can cover approximately 15–20% more area than Type 1, offering potential reductions in material use, transport requirements and associated emissions.

As part of the Industrial Cadets programme, the student team had a great opportunity to put the theory to the test, undertaking practical testing using laboratories at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU). They successfully completed plate bearing and angle of friction tests to assess load-bearing capacity and shear resistance, determining that the material did as they expected. Site testing is now a realistic progression given the success of the lab tests.

The lab test results showed strong alignment between theoretical and practical findings, indicating that the ReCO₂ did perform comparably to traditional Type 1 aggregate in lab-based conditions. As it demonstrates similar engineering properties to the primarily quarried type 1 material, we were interested to see if this would indeed offer an alternative product for crane pads, piling mats, temporary access roads or foundations where type 1 has been specified. Importantly, the students’ findings identified that comparable performance is achieved alongside clear environmental and logistical benefits.

Overall, the students’ findings demonstrate that ReCO₂ is a viable, sustainable alternative for use in our site construction applications, with the potential to significantly reduce carbon impact and without compromising performance. We believe there is an additional factor in the compaction time which using ReCO₂ appears to reduce (possibly due to the fact it is manufactured and doesn’t have the same linear structure), potentially making it faster to install as well as requiring less overall material given the differing angle of friction that helps with load distribution.

We wish the students the best of luck for the presentation of their findings to the panel of assessors on 5th June.

Progress milestone at Etruria Vale.

We’ve now completed excavation of the new shaft on Severn Trent's Etruria Vale 1 scheme, marking a major step forward in delivering storm storage that will help reduce intermittent discharges and support improved water quality in Fowlea Brook.

The 20m diameter, 22m deep shaft will facilitate a new internal tank, providing 5,200m³ of storage – the equivalent of two Olympic-sized swimming pools – boosting the resilience of the network.

When complete, the tank will intercept and store excess combined sewer flows during heavy rainfall, then return them to the network via pumping when flows reduce back to normal levels.

Next, our focus moves to the next stages of constructing the shaft tank, maintaining the same priority on safety and high-quality delivery.
