World Water Week 2026: What did we learn?

World Water Week 2026, which ran between 23-27 August, wraps up this week. Organisers the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) made this year’s theme ‘Water for People and Progress’ and focused on water security and climate resilience.

The conference was based in Stockholm, but resonated in the UK, where England and Wales experienced extreme rainfall extremes in 2026, shifting from a record-breaking wet winter to an unprecedentedly dry July.

The Earth has all the water it will ever get, but as demand increases, the UK has built no new reservoirs in 30 years. Meanwhile, water companies’ infrastructure is creaking.

As civil engineering and infrastructure specialists, with more than 45 years of experience delivering design, construction and maintenance services for the water sector – among others – we help our customers adapt to this new reality.

We help to maximise their existing infrastructure investments to reduce leakage, protect the environment and support new upgrade projects that will help secure current water supplies and build future resilience.

This week, World Water Week put the challenges of global water usage front and centre.

But every day, Barhale is at work as part of the solution of enhancing water retention, quality and sewerage to improve the environment, protect communities and strengthen infrastructures.

Rye Meads Sewage Treatment Works project shortlisted for NCE Tunnelling Awards.

We are delighted to hear that our entry ‘Redefining sewer renewal through innovative trenchless delivery at Rye Meads Sewage Treatment Works’, in collaboration with Thames Water, has been shortlisted for this year’s NCE Tunnelling Awards.

Shortlisted in the Small Works and Microtunnelling Project of the Year category, the project demonstrates how innovation, not scale, defines excellence in trenchless delivery. Faced with a deteriorating trunk sewer, high groundwater conditions and a sensitive SSSI environment, Barhale and Thames Water replaced an approved rehabilitation scheme with an innovative offline pipejacked solution that delivered transformational outcomes.

Confined space shortlisting for NCE Tunnelling Awards.

Finalists for the NCE Tunnelling Awards have been announced and we are proud to share that we have been shortlisted in the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Initiative of the Year category for our work in the confined space area.

Barhale launched a pioneering confined space initiative to deliver a step change in workforce safety, competency and emergency preparedness. Developed through consultation with operatives, rescue teams, supervisors and Top Persons, the initiative combines enhanced training, live competency verification, digital permit management and strengthened emergency response capability.

We are looking forward to attending December’s awards ceremony!

World Water Week 2026: What does it mean for the UK?

World Water Week 2026 launches this week and will be online between 23-27 August.

Organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), this year’s theme is ‘Water for People and Progress’ and focuses on the challenges of water security and climate resilience.

While the conference will be based in Sweden, the UK understands the issues better than most. England and Wales logged their driest July in 190 years. Conversely, October 2023–March 2024 period was the wettest winter half-year in more than 250.

While the closed water cycle ensures the Earth will never run dry, overuse, climate change, and our inability to manage it makes usable, clean freshwater a finite resource.

As an infrastructure and civils company, Barhale works in the space between the extremes of climate change, where water infrastructure is under increasing pressure.

Making a difference through STEM and careers outreach.

Thankyou to everyone across the business who has recently supported STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives, inspiring curiosity and developing essential skills for the next generation.

In the Yorkshire Region, Esther Mozimo (HSE Advisor), Johannes Esterhuyse (Regional Director), Millie Wilson (HSE Technician), Samuel Iseli (Mechanical/Electrical Graduate), Soraya Grayston (Design Coordinator) and Stacey Dakin (Customer & Stakeholder Lead) attended STEMFest in Leeds, where students visited our stand and took part in an experiment demonstrating what can be found in wastewater in primary settlement tanks.

Stacey and Millie also attended a careers day at UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, sharing their experiences with students. Delivered by JN Bentley and JBA Consulting, the event brought together industry professionals to give students a real insight into civil engineering careers.

Chris Mathers (Framework Manager) and Mark Wood (Regional Director) supported the EY Foundation’s Smart Futures programme through online mock interviews, helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds build confidence and prepare for
the workplace.

In the Southern Region, STEM Ambassador Ola Olajide (Senior Site Manager) led a STEMpoint Go Construct K'nex Challenge activity for Years 5 and 6 at The Abbey CE VA Primary School in St Albans. Pupils built space rockets using connecting rods, encouraging creativity, teamwork and problem-solving.

James Turnock (Site Engineer), Justin Seely (Regional Manager) and Radu Gafita (Contracts Manager) took part in a session at London Design and Engineering UTC, during a Thames Water-sponsored project week for Year 9 students. They shared their career journeys and industry experiences, highlighting routes into the industry.

In the Midlands Region, David Stevens (Project Manager), Gemma Banks (Third Party Liaison Officer) and Samantha Tilley (Internal Recruiter) attended the St John Fisher Catholic College Careers Fair, engaging with students from Years 9 to 12 as well as their parents.

Gemma says: “Being so close to our Silverdale site, where we're working on behalf of Severn Trent, gave us the chance to share real-life examples of the work we're undertaking and how everyone comes together to deliver major infrastructure projects.”

Gemma also joined Jamie Geddes (Senior Site Engineer) at St Joseph's College to conduct mock interviews for Year 12 students preparing for university admissions, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.

Shortlist announced for CECA Yorkshire & The Humber Awards.

We are delighted to have been confirmed as finalists in this year’s CECA Yorkshire & the Humber Annual Awards, with our Esholt Storm Capacity Upgrade project, delivered for Yorkshire Water, shortlisted in the Project of the Year – up to £3m category.

The project provided an affordable, buildable and resilient solution to support Yorkshire Water’s AMP7 storm volume obligations, increasing total storm storage capacity at Esholt Wastewater Treatment Works from 21,200m³ to 26,194m³. The scheme also included significant enabling works, including access road diversion, utilities diversions, landscaping and reinstatement, all delivered while maintaining live wastewater operations.

We are excited to be supporting one of Milton Keynes’ largest growth developments and are making excellent progress delivering a major new wastewater infrastructure scheme as part of Anglian Water - Love Every Drop . The Milton Keynes East Growth Scheme will provide the network capacity required to serve more than 4,000 new homes, schools and communities, while helping to enable long-term sustainable growth across the region.

From nature enthusiast to Ecology Advisor: Ivor’s story.

“I wanted to move beyond being part of a large consultancy team and have the chance to shape something myself.”

Originally from a small town outside Amsterdam, Ivor Keesmaat developed an early passion for nature through time spent outdoors, strongly influenced by his grandmother. He went on to study a BSc in Applied Biology with a specialism in Ecology in 2017 and completed a Masters in Ecology in 2022. He later joined the Netherlands Institute of Ecology as a Research Assistant, contributing to ecology projects involving fieldwork, laboratory analysis and data collection.
