Your Kitchen Has Plenty of Lights… So Why Does It Still Feel Dark?

Ever stood at the kitchen worktop and realised you’re basically working in your own shadow?

You might have plenty of lights in the room, but if they’re not in the right places, some areas can still feel surprisingly dark.

It happens a lot around worktops, sinks and kitchen islands. The main lights are on, but the spot where you’re actually chopping, cooking or washing up could do with more light.

Sometimes a few well-planned changes can make a big difference, under-cabinet lighting, better-positioned downlights, pendants over an island, or having different lights on separate switches.

And you probably don’t want the same bright lighting you use for cooking when you’re sitting down with a drink later in the evening. 🍷

If you’re planning a new kitchen or renovating, it’s worth thinking about the lighting before everything is fitted and finished.

A good kitchen shouldn’t just look great in daylight. It should work just as well when the sun goes down. 💡

Before the Builder Starts: 5 Electrical Decisions Worth Making

Planning a renovation? There are a few electrical decisions worth making before the work gets underway.

𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀? 🔌
Think about how each room will be used - TVs, bedside tables, desks, kitchen appliances and charging. It’s much easier to plan positions now than wish you’d added another socket later.

𝟮. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴? 💡
Don’t just think about where the ceiling lights go. Consider task lighting, outside lighting, feature lighting and where you want the switches.

𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆? ⚡undefined
New ovens, hobs, showers and other equipment may have specific electrical requirements. Get these considered while the renovation is being planned.

𝟰. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗱𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲? 🚗☀️
Thinking about an EV charger, solar panels or battery storage later? Even if you’re not installing them now, mentioning your plans early can help when considering the electrical installation.

𝟱. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝗻? 👀
If you’re renovating an older property and you’re unsure about the wiring, it makes sense to have it assessed before everything is plastered, painted and finished.

The exciting part might be choosing the new kitchen or flooring.

But spending a little time planning the electrics now can save a lot of “Why didn’t we think of that?” later. 😅

Plugging your EV in when you get home doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to start charging straight away. With a suitable smart charger, you can schedule charging for the hours that work better for you, including taking advantage of an EV electricity tariff where applicable. So you can get home, plug in, forget about it, and have the car ready when you need it in the morning.

Already have an EV charger? Do you schedule your charging or just plug in and let it go?

Your Neighbour Has 12 Solar Panels. Does That Mean You Need 12 Too?

Not necessarily.

Two houses on the same street can need completely different solar setups.

The right number of panels depends on things like how much electricity you use, available roof space, roof orientation, shading and whether battery storage is part of the plan.

Your neighbour might have 12 panels because that suits their home and energy use.

You might need fewer. You might need more.

That’s why we don’t believe in simply copying the system next door.

It all comes down to what works for your property and how you use electricity. ☀️🏠

It’s the Testing You Don’t See That Matters

A consumer unit might look fine from the outside, but that doesn’t tell you everything about the electrical installation.

Proper electrical work includes checking, testing and making sure everything is doing what it should before the job is signed off.

This is the less glamorous side of the job, but definitely one of the most important. 👍

New Electric Shower? Don’t Assume the Existing Cable Is Suitable.

Replacing an electric shower isn’t always as simple as taking the old one off the wall and fitting a newer, more powerful model.

Different showers can have different electrical demands.

So before fitting one, the existing circuit needs to be checked to make sure the cable, protective device and electrical installation are suitable for the new shower.

For example, upgrading to a higher-powered shower can mean the existing circuit needs attention too.

That’s why we’d rather check what’s already there than assume it’s fine.

New shower. Existing cable. Check they actually belong together. 🚿⚡

That Extension Lead Was Supposed to Be Temporary… 4 Years Ago.

We’ve all got one. 😅

You plugged it in because there wasn’t a socket where you needed one.

Then came the TV. The router. A lamp. A charger.

And somehow the “temporary” extension lead became a permanent part of the room.

If you’re constantly using extension leads simply because your sockets are in the wrong places or there just aren’t enough of them, it might be time to rethink the setup.

Sometimes adding properly positioned sockets can make a room neater, easier to use and better suited to how you actually live in it.

How many “temporary” extension leads are currently hiding in your house?

Bit of sunshine today? ☀️
Your roof could be having a productive Saturday.

Most of us see a sunny Saturday and think BBQ, garden, or getting out for the day.

If you’ve got solar, your roof sees a working day. 😄

While you’re out enjoying the weekend, the panels can be generating electricity for the house and with battery storage, some of that energy can be kept for later when you actually need it.

Not a bad way for the roof to spend its Saturday.

This is why we test before changing a fuseboard.

We recently looked at an older fuseboard in a property in Hoddesdon. The customer was buying the house and wanted to know what they were dealing with electrically.

Rather than just swapping the old board for a new one, we carried out an EICR first.

During the testing we found an open neutral on the upstairs ring circuit. We traced it, repaired the problem, and then went ahead with the new consumer unit.

An old fuseboard doesn’t automatically tell you what condition the rest of the electrics are in.

Sometimes you need to test it to find out what’s actually going on behind it.
