Although the first mass circulated report of an asbestos worker’s death took place over 100 years ago in 1924, there is still confusion around the health risks of asbestos and asbestos containing materials in domestic and non domestic properties.

Asbestos can be found in many products used in buildings, such as ceiling and floor tiles, textured decorative coatings and toilet cisterns.

The general rule is that left alone and in good condition, the risk from asbestos is low. However, once disturbed, asbestos fibres can be released and cause illnesses and disease such as mesothelioma if inhaled.

The best way to stay protected is to have an asbestos survey of the property before any work takes place. The main purpose of an asbestos survey is to make the duty holder and others aware of the accurate locations of asbestos within a building to ensure the safety of employees, contractors and the general public.

The employer of anyone whose work might involve asbestos is responsible for deciding if the work requires a licensed contractor.
Licensable work includes removing sprayed coatings (limpet asbestos), any works involving loose fill insulation, removal or other work which may disturb pipe lagging, the cleaning up of significant quantities or fine/loose debris containing ACM dust, work on asbestos millboard, and work on AIB, where the risk assessment indicates the work won’t be of short duration.

The UK is currently in the midst of a heatwave, with temperatures rising sharply across the UK, and potentially record-breaking heat developing. This is particularly the case in southern and eastern areas of the UK, where temperatures are reaching the mid to high 30s.

Hot, sunny days can be viewed as the ideal time to get some DIY done. No one wants to tackle roof repairs, gutter work, or exterior painting in the drizzle or cold. However, older roofs and exterior panels could contain asbestos cement or asbestos fibres. Cutting, drilling, or sanding these materials outdoors can release asbestos dust, and the hot, dry weather allows asbestos dust to drift further and linger longer than in damp or cool conditions.
