Motivational speaker Brian Tracy once said: "The future belongs to the competent. Get good, get better, be the best!”

More than 40 years ago, The ARG Group began. All successful companies need a raison d'etre, and our reason for being was to meet the need for a professional approach to asbestos removal within the construction industry.

Established in 1984, the goal was to train a dedicated, competent team to a high and reliable standard in response to the transitional period for asbestos laws on a global scale. For example, in the UK, the use of brown and blue asbestos was banned in 1985, with white asbestos following with a ban in 1999.

Firmly committed to asbestos removal, ARG saw opportunities to diversify it's services in a way that complemented it's core operation. In 1987 ARG Contracts Ltd, a construction and refurbishment company, was added to the group, and in 2002, ARG Surveys Ltd added to meet HSE guidelines for surveying and management of Asbestos. UKAS accredited to ISO 17020:2012 Type C Inspection Body 5645. In 2019 to further enhance our service provision, we partnered with a sister company Fibre Clear Analytical. This enables us to provide our clients with access to further services including a UKAS accredited Laboratory for Bulk Sample Analysis and Air Fibre Monitoring/Testing to UKAS ISO 17025:2017 Testing Laboratory 1780 standard.

Through diversification and investment in technology and staff, ARG has developed a strong reputation as a company that delivers the best possible solution to each project we take on. Working with the construction industry, ARG provides "make-good" reinstatement and full refurbishment services following asbestos removal projects. This ensures that once hazardous materials are extracted, the property is fully repaired, restored, and made safe in-house by our team.

The ARG Group began as a competent asbestos removal company, and through experience, time, commitment, investment and training, we have become leaders in our respected field. Don't just take our word for it though. We love a challenge so contact us and see how we can help you.

Because asbestos is often mixed with another material, it's hard to know if you're working with it or not. But, if you work in a building built before the year 2000, it's likely that some parts of the building will contain asbestos.

Asbestos can be found in in a number of places in UK properties, this includes the water tank, pipe lagging and property insulation. Other areas include the toilet cistern, wall paneling, fuse box and heater cupboard.

ARG can provide customers with management surveys, this is a non-intrusive survey that allows us to identify areas of asbestos within a building and sample them for analysis.

The other survey that we provide is a refurbishment/demolition survey, which is required prior to any major refurbishment or demolition works commencing.

This is a fully intrusive survey that requires full access to all areas of a building, including service areas. The surveyor will remove areas of ceilings, walls floors and so on to enable him to map and sample areas which may contain asbestos. The samples will then be analysed and a plan made for removal of the asbestos prior to refurbishment or demolition.

Our approach to asbestos removal and disposal ensures business continuity and keeps client inconvenience to a minimum. We are also experienced in working at heights, where we know asbestos use has been extensive, and may pose additional risk due to its poor condition.

We can also offer additional services that enable our clients to make-good following those removal works where full refurbishment is not planned.

Asbestos continues to be in the news, with numerous products reported as withdrawn from UK retailers due to contamination from the carcinogenic over recent months.

Last week, tests on play sand at Whitley Lodge in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, found it to be contaminated with asbestos. The play sand is often used in outdoor sandboxes and indoor tables. A classroom was closed last Monday at Whitley Lodge so specialised cleaning could take place, with the classroom reopening on Tuesday. Three other schools were closed for testing but have since reopened following negative results for asbestos.

The government announced on Wednesday it was aware some UK products contained "sand contaminated with asbestos" and these products were being recalled by the businesses which sold them. The asbestos found in the product was Chrysotile. Commonly referred to as “white asbestos”, it was frequently used in the manufacture of asbestos containing products during the 20th century before the UK ban of asbestos in 1999.

From January to April 2026, more than 30 children’s toys have been recalled in the UK, following a Guardian article highlighting that play sand sold by Hobbycraft was contaminated with asbestos. These sand products are mainly manufactured in China, where items that contain less than 5% asbestos can be labelled asbestos-free. However, UK law states there is no safe limit for exposure to the mineral.

The sheer number of products being recalled in 2026 alone highlights a wider issue when it comes to mandatory testing and the sourcing of safe, high quality products. Without this, consumers, and particularly children, will continue to be at risk of asbestos exposure.

Schools reopen after being closed for testing after asbestos was found in a Whitley Bay nursery.

Albert Einstein once said: "Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value."

Once known as the “miracle mineral” asbestos was praised for it's strength and resistant properties until the 1970s. It could be found in various parts of buildings, home gadgets such as hairdryers, Christmas decorations, clothing, and automotive parts to name a few. At one point it was even used in toothpaste.

Today we understand the risk of asbestos. Although it is now banned in most countries, asbestos containing materials (ACMs) being used in construction in the past has resulted in it becoming one of the main causes of work-related death. In fact, around 5000 people die annually from asbestos related diseases in Great Britain. These diseases, such as asbestosis and mesothelioma, are incurable and typically take decades to develop.

Left alone and in good condition, the risk from asbestos is low. However, once it is disturbed, asbestos fibres can be released and unknowingly inhaled. To prevent this from happening, it is important to identify risks, particularly in buildings built before the year 2000. This is where we come in. At The ARG Group, we have long-term expertise in asbestos surveys, management, and removal.

Although not a legal requirement to employ a survey company with the relevant UKAS accreditation (ISO17020:2012), it is strongly recommended. Our competent, trained and dedicated surveyors will work with you throughout the process, and post inspection, we can advise you on your next steps in your asbestos management process – whether it be management, remediation, removal or disposal. Over the years we have ensured we have diversified and strengthened our services so we can continue working with our clients throughout all aspects of asbestos management, from start to finish.

Whether a domestic, commercial or industrial customer, we are able to provide the asbestos related services you require, tailored to your exact needs.

Wishing our customers an enjoyable break over the bank holiday weekend.

While it may be tempting to get on with some DIY tasks or refurbishment over the next three days, it's best to be mindful of the age of your property and the location of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) in your building.

All industrial and residential buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000 in the UK could have ACMs present, with asbestos located in places such as floor tiles, toilet cisterns, artex, gutters and walls. If in good condition and left undisturbed, asbestos is safe and won't pose a risk to your health. However, drilling, sanding or scraping areas that contain ACMs could potentially cause asbestos exposure and illnesses such as asbestosis and mesothelioma. If you have textured coatings on the ceilings or walls, don't attempt to remove this.

The ARG Group has experience of working on a wide range of asbestos survey and removal projects. We can work with you to ensure optimum safety and efficient, high quality results.

Muhammed Ali once said "A man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life."

Experience is integral in a work environment that has challenges, as it allows us to make more accurate decisions in novel or uncertain situations. While practising the same skills in the same place can give a worker expertise, it won't give that staff member real world experience.

While doing the same job daily ensures fast and efficient skills development, the diversity of challenging projects results in employees who can problem solve, think critically, adapt and make decisions.

With more than 40 years in operation, The ARG Group has a wealth of experience in delivering bespoke Asbestos services tailored to meet the requirements of individual situations and have provided solutions across an array of challenging environments.

Recent projects include asbestos surveys and major asbestos removal in National Sports centres throughout the U.K, an invasive demolition survey prior to main refurbishment project, followed by asbestos removal of pipe insulation, boarding etc. to public buildings. We have also recently worked with the emergency services on asbestos removal and reinstatement to various Police Stations throughout Cambridgeshire.

Gaining experience never ends and ensures we can meet the needs of our clients in the best possible way. The ARG Group has a continuous focus on improving our service to deliver the best possible results, so we can deliver high quality, cost-effective solutions for you.
