Is your chimney sweep registered with NACS, the National Association of Chimney Sweeps? Approved Document J, provides Building Regulation guidance for combustion appliances and listed in appendix H are the details of recognised trade associations. For sweeps, you will only find NACS listed here.

With high levels of training and a strong focus on household safety, NACS sweeps can be trusted to thoroughly clean and repair your solid fuel appliances and associated flues. The industry can attract nefarious types as the work is all hidden behind the wall.

Having spent 2 years steering the local community towards safe practices and buildings insurance compliance, I notice there are recently some others entering the market without NACS certification. To avoid the following scams be sure to check for NACS membership and feel free to observe your sweep:

1. two rods up and gone.
2. Leaving the property within 20 minutes of arriving.
3. "The hoover takes care of it"; it doesn't!
4. Dangerous situations left unchecked.

Established in 2025, Cutler and Sweep has taken on hundreds of satisfied customers in the area around Melton, Bingham, Grantham and Oakham. 2026 brings with it the new challenge of managing seasonal demand so I have limited my social media posts in recent months and recently took the decision to cease all print advertising.

Most people are finding the business through word of mouth and Google (check out all the 5 star reviews!). So why post now?

The only downside is that some people may interpret the relative silence as a sign that Cutler and Sweep is no longer available. It very much is and I would be delighted to hear from you. Yes, I'm busy, but the priority is to keep the local community safe in their homes and Cutler and Sweep will continue to do what is necessary to make that happen. A day of rest on Friday is fine by me but I would rather have some chimneys to sweep and knives to sharpen. Please let friends and neighbours know that I have time free in the diary!

In the past week I have cleared 3 large birds nests from chimneys. Jackdaws are the main culprits, piling many kilograms of twigs, sheeps wool and moss (and litter!) down the flue. In fact, I once took quarter of a tonne out of a single chimney.

But it is not just Jackdaws. You may have noticed starlings, house martins, rooks, even pigeons or owls showing a deep interest in your chimney pot.

UK legislation and associated guidance rightfully protects nesting birds and it is generally seen as illegal to interfere with nests between March and September.

From my experience, many people will contact me in October to clear established nests and this is just at the time when everybody is looking to have their chimney swept leading to a bottleneck.
