Integrating a mini orchard into a landscape design delivers two benefits - year round visual interest and the joy of picking your own fresh fruit. A sunny, sheltered spot is the perfect place for fruit trees, many of which are nicely compact and don’t take up much space. Pictured here are plum ‘Hauszwetsche’, cherry ‘Stardust’ and apple ‘Elstar’, all of which have matured beautifully in a client’s garden over the last 5 years, providing blossom in spring and delicious produce in summer 🍎

With much of Warwickshire looking like the savannah just now, here’s a little lawn appreciation post. Most of the year lawns look fabulous - they give a sense of openness and space as well as providing a functional area for relaxation and play.

Lawns also stay cooler than paving in extreme heat and absorb heavy rain when the weather pendulum swings the other way. They make a great foil for hard landscaping and planting: we like dotting them with structural anchors like yew balls or feature trees to create contrast and interest even when the grass is dormant.

Don’t despair if yours is looking a bit browner than these and definitely don’t bother watering - it only encourages lazy, shallow roots. Let your lawn have a little rest and as soon as we get some rain and cooler weather it’ll bounce right back 💚

Remember this stuff?! It’s been a long time since we’ve seen rain and Warwickshire is looking very dry, particularly where there’s grass. But grass will come back - there’s no need to water it - and there are lots of other drought-tolerant plants that make a sustainable choice for new planting schemes. Here are our top 5…

1. Sedum/Hylotelephium: the juicy leaves of stonecrop store moisture which keeps them going during dry spells

2. Echinacea purpurea: a long taproot helps coneflowers reach water that’s deep in the ground

3. Lavandula augustifolia: the narrow, silvery leaves of lavender reflect sunlight and reduce water loss from transpiration

4. Thymus vulgaris: native to the Mediterranean, thyme is perfectly suited to hot, dry summers and works well between paving or in gravel

5. Echinops ritro: as well as adding a splash of brilliant blue to borders, globe thistles withstand dry conditions well and are a magnet for pollinators

Summer colour…

Our gardens have been enjoying incredible sunshine these past couple of weeks, and as a result dahlias, echinacea, eryngium and crocosmia have all been blooming a little earlier than usual. More and more we have to think about the plants that are most tolerant to extremes in temperature and precipitation, as well as what will work on a particular site.

Although our climate may be changing, legendary plantswoman Beth Chatto’s philosophy still stands: right plant, right place. Despite the heat, these beauties are looking spectacular.

Beautiful brick… one of our favourite materials, both to specify and to design planting schemes around. We’re blessed with lots of red brick buildings in this part of the world, and if we’re building with it, we’ll usually use vintage reclaimed material for character. Also pictured here are various clay pavers and tumbled bricks from UK Clay Paving Suppliers and Brickworks Vande Moortel, each chosen to add texture, colour and pattern to their respective projects. Whether it’s lush green foliage with grey pavers, or autumn leaves against red brick, the combination of plants with small-format paths and walls is always a winner!

It was plant delivery day yesterday at project which is always an exciting day onsite 🌱 Having cleared and prepared the beds - rescuing this stunning Acer ‘Bloodgood’ from the wilderness in the process - the team got busy planting up a gorgeous selection of aquilegia, echinacea, sedums, hydrangea, alchemilla mollis and evergreen Ilex crenata balls.

A beautiful multi-stemmed Zelkova serrata takes centre-stage in one of the beds, surrounded by the dark purple spears of Salvia ‘May Night‘ and the cottage-garden classic Rosa ‘Eustacia Vye’. We love to specify David Austin Roses in our projects and this shrub rose has a particularly vigorous and bushy habit, so it will fill out the bed with masses of apricot-pink ruffles - and clouds of glorious scent - in no time.

As well as providing lush and colourful views, the ornamental section of the garden will attract lots of pollinators and other beneficial insects. This will ensure a healthy and diverse ecosystem and benefit the kitchen garden that’s planned for the next section.

Astrantia, nepeta and geums are all hardy, clump-forming plants that look great together in a cottage-garden style herbaceous border. They bloom from late spring and will continue to flower into summer.

- Astrantia is famous for its pin-cushion-like flowers, which come in a range of shades. We love this pink variety for open beds.

- Nepeta (otherwise known as catmint) has soft, silvery green foliage and spikes of lavender coloured flowers with a beautiful herbal fragrance. It’s brilliantly drought-tolerant and tough.

- Geums come in all colours and sizes but this tangerine cultivar pairs brilliantly with the purple nepeta and flowers abundantly in early summer.

All of them are reliable, easy to grow and pretty low-maintenance bar the occasional chop to encourage more blooms. Three absolute stalwarts of the June garden!
