A brief step outside the shop earlier amidst an interesting current project I spotted this little gold finch watching me. It used to be a rare occurrence seeing birds like this here but 30 years and three generations making efforts to change some of the decline post war techniques cause these opportunities are becoming much more common. This week alone I have watched a barn owl take two field voles one from the farm drive another from a field with sheep in. Watched 4 greater spotted wood peckers two females feeding two fledglings. Blue t**s, great t**s, chaffinches, sparrows all feeding fledglings too.

Matching existing period mouldings is something I enjoy doing and is a useful part of my business. This is how I would go about deciding on which options to use for this moulding.

Preping some exercises for teaching next week. This one is an introduction to the humble half lap joint. For this exercise I have selected PAR timber from the local builders merchants. This exercise is more than just cutting two simple joints before we start in the workshop we will discuss tools for setting out the job and then producing the job. I will give no other information as to how I did it. Other than the Dovetail angle written on the piece. This is a good exercise in accurate lay out and observing fine details like the shoulder width at the base of the dovetail, the component placing and length. My students will start with a piece of stock identical in length and from the same batch as mine. The true test will be to pile them all up at the end and see if they are all the same. The ability to accurately repeat work again and again is what makes for a really good joiner. These joints were fitted straight of the saw thanks to good disciplined lay out.

Some terrible cement pointing work over some beautiful old lime.

Original cleft lath from a thatched cottage. This is what we are missing from modern building. This cleft timber comes from small trees and coppiced woodland and is incredibly sustainable as well as strong. We need more of this in the world and less petrochemicals.

Not all “ovolo” mouldings are the same despite what people say.

Glazing fillet repair or replacement is something I do a lot of on period windows. These narrow firmer chisels are my tools of choice. My sorby one is very well worn after 23 years with me.
