When carrying out plastering and damp work, health and safety always comes first at AC Plastering and Damp. On a recent job, we uncovered a material that raised concerns and looked like it could potentially contain asbestos. Instead of taking risks, we immediately stopped work, isolated the area, and arranged for professional asbestos testing before continuing.

Too often, corners are cut in the trade, but protecting our customers, their homes, and everyone on site is non-negotiable. Asbestos can be extremely dangerous if disturbed, so the safest approach is always to stop and check rather than guess.

The “Damp Problem” That Wasn’t: How a Simple Fix Saved a Costly Job

Damp doesn’t always mean disaster — and this job was a perfect example of that.

We were called out to a property where the homeowner was convinced they were facing a major damp issue. They’d already been told it could involve expensive treatments, potentially even a full damp-proof course. Naturally, they were expecting the worst.

But when we carried out a proper inspection, the real cause was much simpler.

👉 The plasterboard had been installed touching the floor.

That might not sound like a big deal, but it’s a very common mistake. When plasterboard sits directly on a solid floor — especially one that can hold moisture — it creates what’s known as bridging. Moisture from the floor gets drawn straight up into the board, mimicking the signs of rising damp.

So instead of a structural damp issue, this was a case of poor installation.

What We Did

* Removed the affected plasterboard
* Created the correct gap between the floor and new boards
* Ensured proper separation to stop moisture transfer
* Reinstated the area cleanly and professionally

No chemicals. No unnecessary systems. No inflated costs.

The Result

A dry, problem-free wall — and a very relieved customer who avoided spending thousands on work they simply didn’t need.

The Takeaway

Not all damp is what it seems. Jumping straight into expensive solutions without identifying the root cause can cost homeowners a lot of money for no reason.

This is why proper diagnosis matters.

If you’re seeing signs of damp — peeling paint, staining, or mould — it doesn’t automatically mean major work is required. Sometimes, it’s just about spotting the small details others miss.

Blocking in a Doorway the RIGHT Way (and avoiding cracks later 👇)

Thinking of blocking up an old doorway? Done right, it should look like it was never there. Done wrong… you’ll see cracks creeping through your fresh plaster in no time.

One of the most common mistakes we see is leaving the old door frame in place and boarding or plastering straight over it. It might seem quicker, but timber and masonry move differently — and that movement almost always leads to cracking along the lines of the frame.

The proper way?
Remove the frame completely, tie your new blockwork or studwork properly into the existing wall, and prep it correctly before plastering. That’s what gives you a solid, crack-free finish that lasts.
