Planning submitted!

Our latest Mid Devon project replaces a red-brick bungalow with a contemporary home. Our design makes the most of the setting with upside-down living spaces that connect the home to its garden and capture the stunning views. Using brick, charred timber and a metal roof, the materials are selected to weather beautifully and complement the site’s woodland setting, blending domestic character with the area’s rural heritage.

Following the completion of ‘Pavilion House’, we’re pleased to share a first look at the project settling into its landscape.

From a Class Q fallback scheme, we produced CGI imagery from when we took the scheme over; the design intent has been successfully realised. The concept of a refined, minimalist home orientated toward its expansive views has come to fruition!

A material palette of stone and timber cladding will gradually weather and tone with the environment. Generous ‘frameless’ glass panels form a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior spaces, with large openings, corner glazing and slender frame profiles to dissolve boundaries. The result is a home immersed in its rural setting—filled with natural light and framed by the changing colours of the surrounding landscape.

After four years of dedicated work, we are delighted to have secured planning permission for three bespoke dwellings near Taunton. Replacing an existing dwelling, the proposal makes efficient use of the site to deliver a collection of executive homes set within a landscaped environment that embraces the surrounding rural views.

The siting, form, and layout of the buildings have been carefully developed in response to the site’s natural characteristics and constraints. Mature hedgerows and trees have been retained to preserve the existing landscape character. The material palette features red brick, timber cladding, and zinc or grass roof, which have been chosen to reference both local residential and agricultural architecture, and to weather gracefully over time.

Each home has been designed around generous entrance halls with double-height spaces, creating a strong sense of arrival. Plots 1 and 2 share a common design language, offering expansive open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas complemented by separate snugs and sitting rooms. Practical spaces, including utility and boot rooms, support the main living areas. The first floors accommodate four to five bedrooms, each with en-suites, dressing areas, and studies.

Plot 3 is sensitively integrated into the hillside, responding to the site’s topography. The entrance level features a gym, swimming pool, and a large reception area leading up to the principal living spaces. The upper floor enjoys direct garden access and provides single-storey living, with the kitchen, dining, and bedroom areas positioned to take advantage of elevated views across the landscape.

All three dwellings feature shared surface parking and double garages.

We’re delighted to welcome Coreen and Jack to the LSL Architecture team.

Coreen joins us as a Senior Technician, bringing extensive experience from several local practices. With her wealth of knowledge and fresh perspective, she plays a key role in supporting the delivery of both planning and technical design projects.

Jack is currently completing his T-Level in Design, Surveying and Planning at UCS College Group. As part of his work placement, he’s gaining valuable hands-on experience and developing his skills through on-the-job training.

Both have settled in brilliantly, and we’re excited to see the positive contributions they’ll bring to the team.

On-site

We’re delighted to begin work on a contemporary extension to a Grade II Listed lodge near Taunton. With Planning and Listed Building Consent recently secured, the project has progressed swiftly to the construction stage.

Designed to respect the character of the existing single-storey lodge, the glazed extension creates a constant visual link to the original property. It accommodates a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, complemented by covered terraces that strengthen the relationship between inside and outside spaces.

By carefully lowering the ground level, the new structure sits discreetly beneath the existing eaves line. Internally, subtle changes in floor finish and level mark the transition from old to new, offering a sensitive yet distinctive design response that celebrates both the historic lodge and its modern addition.

We are delighted to have won a William Stansell Historic Building Award for our project at South Road, Taunton, Somerset.

The judges commented:

A modern contemporary extension to an 18th-century town house, replacing a former lean-to, that sits very comfortably on the rear of the house. Executed in a striking black zinc finish, it is well detailed and provides a light-filled addition to the interior.

The awards recognise the positive contribution that craftsmanship, design and construction can make in care, appearance and appreciation of the historic environment of Somerset.

We are delighted to have won this award, and congratulations to the other winners on the night.

Planning Approved!

We are pleased to have obtained Planning Approval for extensive remodel and additions to this cottage within the Blackdown Hills, overlooking Taunton.

The ground floor includes a new utility/ boot room with open-plan living spaces that connect areas of the cottage through changes in level. The first floor includes larger bedrooms and a master bedroom with additional dressing and bathroom facilities.

Aesthetically, a new gable projection to the home has been introduced that adds symmetry to the rear elevation, which is infilled with a single-storey dining space. The large sliding doors open up the views from the home and fill the property with light.

A new office and garage building is integrated into the sloping site, providing a 2-storey built form with materials that complement the dwelling.

The design approach has been carefully balanced to work with the site levels and ensure historic elements of the property remain visible both internally and externally, resulting in a sympathetic and complementary design.
