Before we all vanish off into the land of tinsel, cheese, sprouts and asking "what day is it?!", we wanted to share the pictures from our staff christmas party, where we raced slot cars, threw axes and mastered an escape room. Having worked up quite the appetite at Daventry Miniature Race Cars & Miniature World, we headed up the road to The Countryman for a well earned meal.

Congratulations to Richard Jack, who alongside Grant Henshaw and the team at Energy House Labs, the originators and all around developer/physicist powerhouses Electric Pocket, for co-authoring a journal paper on the development and validation of 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭3𝐃 for in-situ U-value measurement.

Developing a genuinely new measurement tool and then thoroughly validating it, is a long and often painful road. Anyone who’s tried to move from concept to credible evidence will know how hard that is. I’m genuinely proud of what we’ve achieved together.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫?
U-values underpin EPCs, retrofit decisions, and heat pump sizing, yet both lookup tables and conventional calculations have repeatedly been shown to carry typical uncertainties of 50%+. That level of uncertainty is baked into huge strategic and financial decisions across the housing sector.

𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒕3𝑫 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒑𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍.
It enables accurate, in-situ U-value measurement in a single site visit using infrared thermography and smart processing – making real measurement viable at scale for the first time.

If we start measuring rather than assuming, the prize is enormous:

👣 A step change in our understanding of what materials and systems actually work in real buildings
🗣️ Far better feedback loops for manufacturers and designers
📈 Massive improvements in delivered performance – if we’re willing to move beyond business as usual

The paper is an important milestone, but also just the beginning of making U-value measurement mainstream.

Join our Technical Director, Richard Jack at elementalLONDON on Thursday (20th) at 12.00 in the CIBSE Innovation Theatre as he battles it out with other speakers in the Rapid Assessment of Building Fabric Performance competition.

He will be demonstrating just how easily measured data can and should be obtained and used to really understand how our buildings are performing.
