With the temperatures starting to drop it's time to think of your heating. Are you in need of upgrading your existing electric heating to more economical heating.

Old storage heaters are outdated due to having to guess what the weather will be like tomorrow. You could go for new storage heaters which allow you more control over how you heat your home. Alternatively opt for electric radiators which give you heat when you need it and both options are more economical and asthetically pleasing.

One of my jobs yesterday was regarding a call about a fault on a lighting circuit. The customer had said they had the issue for a few weeks and had tried to find the cause themselves but with no luck.
Within 1 hour, I had managed to trace the fault to a cable where a light had been taken away at least 15 years ago.

Cable was put into a suitable junction box and power to the lights now issue free.

Is it time for upgrading your electric heating?

The summer is an ideal time to upgrade your electric heating system. There are lots of different types of electrical heating systems from new storage heaters (bottom pic), oil filled electric radiators and infrared panels. If you have storage heaters (top pic) or panel heaters get in contact to discuss what electrical heating system would work best for you and your home.

These are just a few different types of consumer units that are now outdated.

Why should you think about upgrading your consumer unit?

>Improved Electrical Safety
New fuseboard come with Rcds or Rcbos which greatly reduce the risk of electric shocks and fires. This is because these devices cut off the electrical supply within milliseconds if a fault is detected, protecting both people and property.

>Better Fault Diagnosis
New consumer units make it easier to diagnose faults within your electrical system especially with rcbos as each circuit has its own labelled breaker.

> Support for Modern Appliances & Extensions
Todays homes have more electrical demand with home offices, smart tech and ev chargers etc. New consumer units also now come with Surge Protection devices which further protect your electronics (Laptops, gaming consoles, smart tvs etc) in the event of a power surge.

One of todays jobs was installing an additional socket for behind a tv.
Wall was wraggled out, conduit installed and new socket has been fitted. Ready to get plastered.

Why do i use conduit and not just remove the plaster and cable clip the cable for a quicker job? Futureproofing, should anything ever go wrong with the socket and cables get damaged then a new cable can be installed without damaging the wall again.

A customer contacted me about this traditional lamppost, after being let down by a few different trades either not getting back to her or not turning up.

Its not a normal job but i managed to replace the original cast iron head that had been damaged in the storm and fitted with a new head purchased by the customer. Customer is delighted to have it looking like it once did.

Last week i was lucky to get the chance to go on another course from Aico, the leading smoke alarm manufacturers, with the updated regulations and products.

Has your home got the correct amount of smoke alarms?

The minimum amount of alarms to comply are the following;
A smoke detector in the downstairs hallway and upstairs hallway (if you have one)
A smoke detector in the most frequently used room, usually this is the livingroom
A heat detector in the kitchen
A co detector nearby to a fuel burning appliance, eg boiler or coal fire.

If you dont have these, or if you do but you're not sure your alarms are still in date give me a call.

Got called for a smell of burning coming from the fuseboard. Checked the fuseboard and all okay, upon further inspection i found this. Customer phoned Scottish Power who came out and replaced the damaged equipment.

Glad it was caught before further damage was caused.
