Numbers Don’t Lie: 23 Years of M&S Carpentry
I had a meeting this week with a potential new client. We spoke for over 90 minutes; the rapport was excellent, and it felt like we had known each other for years. At one point, he said, "I’ve actually not heard of your company before."
It was a fair point. In an industry where firms appear and disappear after a single project, staying under the radar while delivering consistent results is sometimes part of the journey.
M&S Carpentry has been operating since 2003. In 2016, we transitioned to M&S Carpentry & Joinery Limited, and began working with national housebuilders. Since that transition, we have meticulously tracked our data. I’m a firm believer that while talk is cheap, numbers speak for themselves.
Since 2016, our track record includes:
• 3,650 Days Trading as a Limited Company
• 4,178 Roofs Completed
• 3,785Joist Installations
• 3,967 1st Fixes
• 3,916 2nd Fixes & Finals
• 14 Major Sites from 20 to 223 plots, across the South West (Bristol, Weston-super-Mare, Exeter, Gloucester, Taunton, and Warminster).
A Strategic Shift: Quality Over Volume
At one stage, I managed 28 carpenters across five live sites. It was a constant cycle of "firefighting" and "shuffling labour" from one site to keep another happy. I realized that wasn't the level of service I wanted to provide.
I have since intentionally streamlined our operations. We don't want 200 carpenters or 25 sites. By focusing on a tighter, more dedicated team, we offer a premium service with less stress and higher accountability for our clients.
Resilience in a Changing Industry
Over 23 years, we’ve seen it all: recessions, a global pandemic, and the constant ups and downs of the construction industry. Like any firm with this much longevity, we’ve made mistakes and learned hard lessons along the way. Each challenge has only made us stronger and more refined.
