⚡ Battery storage + off-peak tariffs = one of the smartest energy upgrades for UK homes right now.

Here’s a real-world example for the average UK household:

🏡 Average daily electricity use: ~8kWh
📈 Standard daytime electricity price: ~30p/kWh
🌙 Off-peak overnight tariff: ~7p/kWh

Without battery storage:

8kWh × 30p = £2.40 per day
≈ £876 per year

With battery storage charged overnight:

8kWh × 7p = 56p per day
≈ £204 per year

💰 Potential annual saving: around £670+

And that’s before adding solar panels, EV charging optimisation, or future energy price rises.

A typical home battery system can store cheap overnight electricity and power your home during peak-rate hours — reducing reliance on expensive grid energy when prices are highest.

🔋 Smarter energy usage
📉 Lower electricity bills
🌍 Reduced carbon footprint
⚡ Greater energy independence

Battery storage is no longer just for solar homes — it’s becoming a powerful money-saving tool in its own right.

⚡️Let’s talk about consumer units and understanding RCD Protection & Modern Electrical Safety ⚡️

When consindering electrical safety systems or a potential consumer unit upgrade it can be overwhelming with all the different protective devices available. Hopefully this post will give you a better understanding

Residual Current Devices (RCDs) are a critical part of electrical safety, designed to disconnect supply quickly when a fault is detected—protecting against electric shock and fire risks. Under the BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), RCD protection is now widely required across domestic and commercial installations.

🔍 Types of RCDs & Their Uses:

Type AC – Detects alternating sinusoidal currents. Suitable for basic circuits but now limited in use.

Type A – Detects both AC and pulsating DC currents. Commonly used for circuits with electronics like washing machines and LED lighting.

Type F – Designed for appliances with variable speed drives (e.g. modern washing machines, heat pumps).

Type B – Detects AC, pulsating DC, and smooth DC currents. Essential for EV chargers, solar PV systems, and advanced equipment.

⚡️ Beyond RCDs – Enhanced Protection Devices:

🔸 Surge Protection Devices (SPDs)Protect installations from transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes or switching events. Required under BS 7671 where consequences of overvoltage could impact safety or cause significant damage.

🔥 Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs)Detect dangerous arcing conditions that traditional protective devices may miss—helping prevent electrical fires. Increasingly recommended in higher-risk premises such as HMOs and residential buildings.

📘 Key Takeaway:Modern electrical installations rely on a combination of protective devices—RCDs, SPDs, and AFDDs—to meet current safety standards and comply with wiring regulations. Selecting the correct type ensures both compliance and optimal protection.

Before you hire an electrical contractor, take a moment to do your homework. ⚡

Not all electricians are created equal — and not all are properly registered. Always check that the company you’re using is accredited with a recognised governing body such as NICEIC or NAPIT. These organisations ensure electricians meet strict safety and competency standards.

Certification isn’t optional — it’s mandatory. Any legitimate electrical work, especially in domestic or rental properties, should come with the correct paperwork. This isn’t just a formality — it’s your proof that the work has been carried out safely and in line with regulations.

EICRs (Electrical Installation Condition Reports) are especially important. They provide a detailed assessment of the safety and condition of an electrical system and can highlight hidden dangers before they become serious hazards.

We were recently called out to carry out an inspection after a customer had already paid a so-called “electrical contractor” to complete work — but no certification was ever provided. 🚨

When we conducted the report, the findings were shocking.

Unsafe installations. Poor workmanship. Potentially dangerous faults that could have put lives at risk.

This is exactly why proper checks matter.

Don’t take chances when it comes to electrical safety:
✔️ Verify registration
✔️ Ask for certification
✔️ Never accept incomplete or undocumented work

Your safety — and your property — depend on it

🔋 We’re Now Qualified to Install Battery Storage Systems! 🔋

We’re pleased to announce that Switch Electrical Solutions is now fully qualified to install Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) — more commonly known as battery storage systems.

Battery storage allows your home to store electricity for later use instead of sending unused energy back to the grid. This means that if you have solar panels, you can save the energy generated during the day and use it in the evening when you need it most. Even without solar, battery systems can store cheaper off-peak electricity to help reduce your overall energy costs.

By installing a battery storage system, you can:
• Make better use of the energy your home produces
• Reduce reliance on the grid
• Lower your electricity bills
• Add resilience during power interruptions

As qualified installers, we can now safely design and install battery storage systems that integrate seamlessly with your home’s electrical setup.

If you’re interested in learning how battery storage could benefit your home, feel free to get in touch with us for advice or a quote.

A recent lighting upgrade at St Leonard’s Church, Shipham by Switch Electrical Solutions ✨

The goal was to enhance visibility while preserving the calm, reflective atmosphere of the space. By carefully angling the fixtures and keeping light levels soft and warm, we avoided harsh glare and instead created gentle shadows that highlight the church’s beautiful stonework and architectural detail.

The result is a subtle, sympathetic illumination that complements the character of this historic building while improving usability for services and events.
