Front gardens have to work hard.

They’re the first thing you see when you come home, but they also need to be practical - from the entrance drive to the route to the front door, planting, access and the way everything sits with the house.

For this project, we landscaped and replanted the front garden, including trees, large shrubs, natural sandstone, kerbing, decorative bricks and stone slabs.

A front garden that feels considered, practical and welcoming.

Thinking about adding a water feature, but worried it’ll become another thing to look after?

It’s a fair question, and one we hear a lot.

The truth is, water features don’t have to be high maintenance. But they do need to be designed properly from the start.

Position, access, water movement, pumps and filtration all make a big difference to how easy it is to live with.

Most issues come from the practical side being treated as an afterthought.

Get that part right, and a water feature becomes something that adds calm, movement and interest to the garden - not another job on the list.

It’s always lovely to return to a finished garden and see how it has settled into everyday life.

The planting has softened beautifully, the Adezz water table is still bringing gentle movement to the space, and the Millboard decking continues to create a natural link between the house and garden.

A calm, usable space, ready to be enjoyed again this weekend.

A watering tip from Danny that’s been called “genius” (at least once). Which may be slightly generous… but we’ll absolutely take it.

No sprinkler? No problem.

Push a garden fork into the ground, rest the hose through it, and let it do its thing.

It gives you a nice spread of water without having to stand there holding the hose like a human sprinkler.

Simple, practical and useful.

What do you think?

A great garden project starts long before the build does.

It starts with a clear plan.

Without one, things can quickly change once work begins; ideas shift, details get missed, and the end result often isn’t quite what was imagined at the start.

That’s why the design stage matters so much.

It’s the time to properly think about:
👉 how the space will actually be used
👉 how each area flows together
👉 what’s worth investing in - and what isn’t

So when the build starts, everything already has a purpose.

No rushed decisions.
No second guessing.
Just a garden designed to work properly for the way you live.

A water feature doesn’t just change your garden - it brings it to life!

Water naturally attracts wildlife.

Birds, insects, pollinators - even in a small space, you’ll start to see more activity.

And with the right approach:
💧 Recirculating systems reduce water waste
☔️ Rainwater can be reused
🦋 Planting can support biodiversity

It becomes part of something bigger.

Not just a feature - but a more balanced, living garden.

If you’re considering a water feature, we’ve covered the design approach in more detail on the blog (link in bio)

We’re incredibly proud of this one.

Our Radnage project, designed by and built by our team at J&S Scapes, was recognised at the APL Awards for Biodiversity & Sustainability - a project shaped by collaboration, care and a shared commitment to working with nature.

Set in the Chilterns, the garden was reimagined from a tired, exposed space into something more naturalistic, accessible and in tune with its surroundings.

Rainwater is guided from the roof into a steel rill, flowing through a wildlife pond and wetland before reaching a soakaway - managing water on site while bringing movement, reflection and habitat into the garden. One of our favourite moments is the way the pond reflects light onto the porch ceiling, softening the arrival home.

At the rear, a level terrace connects seamlessly to the house, with an integrated ramp leading into a series of distinct seating areas. Despite its shallow depth, the space feels generous - shaped by a bespoke oak bench set within a raised brick planter and a calm reflection pool that draws light into the heart of the garden.

A project that proves sustainability and design can work hand in hand.

One of the most common mistakes with garden lighting?

Too much of it.

A well-designed scheme isn’t about lighting everything.
It’s about lighting the right things.

A tree.
A change in level.
A pathway.
A seating area.

Done properly, the darker areas matter just as much as the lit ones.

That’s where depth and atmosphere come from.

-------

If you’re planning a new garden or redesigning an existing space, thinking about lighting early on can make a significant difference to how the space looks and feels long-term.

We've written a blog post on how to approach it in our latest blog: https://bit.ly/Garden-lighting-design

Thinking about adding a water feature? Start here ⤵️

Before choosing the style, it’s worth thinking about how it fits into the space:

➡️ Scale matters - too big overwhelms, too small disappears

➡️ Positioning is key - place it where you’ll actually see and hear it

➡️ Sunlight affects maintenance - too much = algae, too little = limited planting

➡️ Sound level matters - subtle trickle vs statement feature

The best water features aren’t just added in.
They’re designed as part of the garden from the start.

That’s what makes them feel right.

If a water feature is something you’re thinking about, our latest blog goes into the design side in more detail and explains how to make it work as part of the wider garden - read more here https://jands-scapes.co.uk/water-features-in-garden-design-creating-calm-movement-and-life-outdoors/
