⚠️ PLUG-AND-PLAY SOLAR HAS ARRIVED… WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? 🔥☀️
Plug-and-play solar systems are being released in the UK, allowing panels to be plugged directly into a household socket.
I work in the solar industry, and I can see why people like the idea — cheap, simple and no installer required. But electricity and solar PV aren’t something to mess around with.
Some of the potential concerns include:
🔥 Overheating and fire risk – sockets, plugs and existing circuits need to be suitable for sustained electrical loads.
⚡ Back-feeding electricity into a circuit – power is being introduced into the household wiring from another source, so correct protection and installation are vital.
🔌 Old or unsuitable wiring – how many people buying these systems actually know the condition of the socket, cable, connections and consumer unit they’re plugging into?
🛡️ Electrical protection – professionally installed solar systems are designed with appropriate isolation, protection and earthing arrangements.
🏠 DIY installation – panels still need to be securely mounted. A solar panel coming loose in high winds isn’t something you want flying off a roof or balcony.
🚒 Cheap or non-compliant equipment – once a market like this takes off, you can guarantee there’ll be questionable equipment appearing online.
📋 Grid and regulatory requirements – just because something has a plug on it doesn’t mean you can ignore the requirements that apply to connecting generation to the electricity network.
And finally… insurance. If a DIY solar installation causes an electrical fault or fire, I’d certainly want to know exactly where I stood with my home insurer.
I’m all for making solar more accessible, but there’s a reason qualified electricians, MCS standards, DNO notifications and electrical testing exist.
