During a recent trip to Puglia, Italy it was impossible to not notice the amount of dead olive trees. Puglia has an estimated 60 million yes 60 million olive trees. It’s estimated that Xylella fastidiosa a bacteria that disrupts Xylem flow (water and nutrient vessels) will kill 20million trees. It’s an insane loss of trees and earning potential for the farmers. Everywhere you look it’s dead trees. So sad. Olive farmers in the rest of Italy, France, Spain and Portugal are very worried. For us here in Blighty I guess the cost of our extra virgin olive oil is going to sky rocket. There’s a huge replanting of resilient trees happening, let’s hope it works and this ancient profession prevails.
