Three months after being selected to lead the e-scooter trial in Liverpool, leading e-scooter operator, Voi Technology, has been been increasing the number of vehicles available and expanding the area where they can be used in to meet the increasing demand outside the city centre. The expansion is being delivered in close collaboration with the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Liverpool City Council and will also see the e-scooters serve new Covid-19 mass testing centres. The vehicles are available to hire at City centre hospitals with 75% discount available for NHS staff.
E-scooter trials are taking place in cities across the UK including Cambridge, Bristol and Birmingham with the Liverpool e-scooter trial being one of the fastest growing and most popular in the country. This expansion, which will continue through January to include other areas North and South of the city, opens up opportunities to travel by e-scooter to even more people providing a socially distancing alternative for short journeys around the city centre and nearby neighbourhoods.
Voi is also working closely with Merseyside Police and key stakeholders - including local businesses - to ensure the safety of all road users. As the trial progresses, Voi will continue to educate its riders through in-app messages related to safe riding, rules of e-scooters and tips and advice on where to park safely. In addition, Voi also takes special measures to protect riders against Covid-19 including daily cleaning and disinfecting of the e-scooters.

How green and profitable are e-scooters? 🤔

Data collected by Lime from Berlin, London and Paris shows a 15% increase in the number of electric bike and scooter trips, between pre-lockdown February and the warmer month June, when restrictions had been eased.

While some of the increase is seasonal, the distances travelled rose 68%, and by even more in areas with newly-installed bike lanes.

Justine Bornstein tracks the industry for the consultancy Deloitte, and says: "The various Covid-related lockdowns have been very good for the industry as a whole, but not for every company. There has definitely been an increase in the use of bikes and scooters".

"With much less car traffic on the street, people who had been put off for safety reasons were now trying out these new modes," she says.

Is that suffragette, Florence Priscilla, Lady Norman riding a scooter through the streets of London?" I hear you say. 🤔 Well yes it is!!
English socialite Lady Norman CBE, was given the motorised scooter as a birthday gift from her husband, Sir Henry Norman in 1916 and she used it to travel to and from her office in London 🇬🇧
Manufactured in New York and Germany, the scooter, named the Autoped, was one of the first of its kind and was tested by the US postal service as a means of fast transport for its special delivery service. The foldable scooter was also reportedly used as a quick get-away machine for New York gangs, racing down narrow alleys beyond the reach of police cars 🛴💨 🚓
A lot of the early scooter designs were unstable, uncomfortable to ride and difficult to handle. The decades leading up to World War II saw the gradual introduction of a range of refinements, including efficient lights and brakes, gears, suspension, enclosed bodies and leg shields.
In the 1930's, scooters were introduced as a the ideal mode of transport and were commonly used among military bases. Ironically, the era of the scooter truly began after the war as a direct result of fuel rationing.
Scooters history runs deep and they have come a long way since the first Autoped. Todays electric scooters are definitely more efficient and eco friendly than their gas guzzling cousins.
