Got a flat roof covered in awkward details? A soil vent pipe through the middle, a rooflight kerb, a change of level, an upstand at the house wall. Those details are where flat roofs usually start leaking, and there is a system designed for exactly that situation.
A liquid applied roofing system is a waterproof membrane built up on site with a brush or roller rather than laid as a sheet. A primer goes onto a prepared surface, resin is applied, a reinforcing fleece is embedded while it is still wet, and a further coat goes over the top. Once cured, the reinforcement is locked inside the resin and the whole thing behaves as one continuous sheet formed in place.
Because it goes on wet, it follows whatever shape it meets. A pipe gets the membrane taken up its collar in one continuous piece. An upstand gets the same membrane carried up and terminated properly. No cutting, no welding, no preformed corner pieces, and no hot works on your property.
It is also the standard approach for refurbishing a roof that is tired but structurally sound. Many older asphalt and felt roofs can be cleaned, prepared and overcoated rather than stripped out, which avoids a lot of disruption and waste.
The honest caveat is that preparation is the whole job. A liquid membrane bonds chemically to what is underneath, so a dusty, damp or loose surface means the bond fails and the membrane lifts. That is why we clean back to a sound surface, let it dry, test for trapped moisture where there is doubt, and prime with the correct primer for that specific substrate. And where insulation is blown or felt is delaminating, it has to come off rather than be sealed in.
