On the 7th February 1984, astronaut Bruce McCandless flew a Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU) completely untethered from the Challenger Space Shuttle.

This illustration reflects the sublime, the awe and fear of that moment. It gives the silence in the void a shape. The astronaut isn’t just in space, they’re being slowly swallowed by it.
