Tuned a Yamaha baby grand piano on 3/6/25 at NEC, Birmingham, for Smart Manufacturing Week. It was quite an experience. Essentially an indoor construction site. I had to wear a hi-vis vest, and the site noise was horrendous as the exhibition opened the next day. It all worked out in the end though. Give me the peace and serenity of a domestic tuning, with the occasional tv or barking dog in the background!! 😂

Yesterday, I tuned two contrasting pianos in a Catholic College. The first, was a Bluthner baby grand. Although slightly flat, it tuned well, and the instrument was generally in good condition. The second, was a William Sames upright. An early example of an overstrung. This one was nearly a semitone flat, but still pulled up to concert pitch without any real problems (or breakages)!!

Recently tuned and repaired a William Sames 'straight strung' overdamper action piano, dating from around 1896 - 1900 approx. Lovely old instrument with candle sconces on front of case, equally well loved by its owner! Had some trouble with broken hammer shanks, as they were originally made from cedar, and this becomes brittle as it dries out over the years.

I tuned a straight - strung over damper action type piano, approx. 110 years old, a couple of weeks ago, bought for about £60 from a Charity Shop. When repairing a broken string, the associated hitch pin snapped off the frame. With a piano of this age and condition, it could be metal fatigue or rust. But the lesson to be learned is this: If you are considering buying a 'pre-loved' piano, and are unsure about what to look for - take a qualified individual with you i.e a Tuner/Technician. Is it a case of CAVEAT EMPTOR?

Here's a big hint to all parents. With Christmas just around the corner, why not get an acoustic piano to fulfil your musical child's wishes? You never know what it might lead to - a lifelong hobby and all consuming passion? Fame & fortune as a performer? Opening the door to a more technical career as a Piano Tuner/Technician perhaps?
The list could be endless, and all because you had the foresight to indulge your child's passion for music. Also remember that the piano can be a fine and elegant piece of furniture, and the focal point to the room. 🎹🎶
