Entries are open for our annual Travel Scholarship.

Since 2005, the scholarship has supported emerging voices in architecture with a £2,000 award for overseas research in architecture, architectural technology and urban design. Open to students and recent graduates, it offers a rare opportunity to pursue ambitious ideas, deepen research, and gain new perspectives through international travel.

We are seeking proposals for original, thought-provoking research that will make a meaningful contribution to architectural knowledge. Each year, a panel of judges selects the recipient. This year’s panel includes ADAM Director Hugh Petter alongside an invited external judge.

Entries close on Friday 5th June 2026.

For this month’s Project Spotlight, we’re showcasing this renovated three-storey country house, recently featured in The Telegraph.

Set on the edge of the South Downs National Park, the design reimagines the home for modern family living while respecting its historic origins.

A key focus was maximising natural light, relocating the main reception rooms to the south and west elevations and introducing dual-aspect windows throughout. A new entrance on the north elevation, featuring a columned porch from the Gibbs Range designed in collaboration with Haddonstone Ltd, creates a striking sense of arrival into the central stair hall.

Highlights include a new elevated west-facing terrace to enjoy afternoon and evening sun, the opening up of previously blind windows to flood interiors with daylight, and a transformed basement now serving as a family entertainment space.

Every intervention has been carefully considered to enhance the home while remaining sympathetic to its original architecture.

It was a pleasure to see the Country Life Magazine Garden Lover’s Library so full of life at the RHS - Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show last week.

Designed by ADAM Partner George Saumarez Smith with his fiancée Jane Kennerley, the space was conceived as something lived-in and quietly layered, a room that might belong to someone with a genuine love of both gardens and books. In his words, it’s “a library belonging to a true garden lover.”

It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how warmly it was received, and how strongly that idea resonated with so many.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to visit, to look closely, and to share such generous words about the room throughout the week. Now that the show has drawn to a close, we’re grateful to have been part of such a special week, and to everyone who helped make it so memorable.

It was a truly collaborative effort, and our special thanks go to Watts1874 for the wallpaper, Artorius Faber for the fireplace and floor, Munder Skiles for the furniture, Arabella Mcnie for overseeing the choice of fabrics; Nina Campbell, Manuel Canovas Paris, La Maison Pierre Frey, Andrew Martin, Osborne and Little, and Houles for supplying the fabrics, and to Giles Kime and the Country Life team for this incredible opportunity.

ADAM Director Hugh Petter has contributed his insights, alongside Philip Fry and Roger File, to an article in Classic Planning Institute Herald latest issue, titled 'From Short-Term Profit to Long-Term Place: Rethinking Housing in the UK.'

The article examines the structural challenges behind today’s housing delivery model and highlights the importance of long-term stewardship, locally responsive design and a renewed focus on placemaking. Drawing on insights from across the industry, it makes the case for moving beyond standardised, volume-led development towards creating vibrant, enduring communities.

Hugh emphasises that successful places must be thoughtfully “curated and husbanded” over time, rather than delivered as short-term, transactional products.

We're thrilled to see ADAM Director Hugh Petter featured in The Telegraph, showcasing the transformation of a Georgian country house in Hampshire, reimagined for modern family life.

As Hugh explains: 'The bones of the house were really good... but it didn't reflect how the owners want to live now.'

The article highlights how Hugh, alongside Associate Director Pedro Honwana, sensitively reconfigured the early 19th‑century property and retaining its historic character while creating a layout better suited to contemporary living. By improving flow, relocating the entrance, and connecting the ground and lower ground floors, the design brings coherence and usability to a once disjointed plan.

Working in close collaboration with Interior Designer Charlotte Smiley, the project also embraces bold colour and pattern, demonstrating how historic architecture can confidently support vibrant, characterful interiors.

Last week, ADAM Director Darren Price was delighted to speak at NYC Design Week alongside Henriette von Stockhausen of VSP Interiors and Ed Reis of Reis Contracting, hosted by Merlin Wright at the Plain English Design NYC showroom, on the topic of the spirit of the English country house.

Reflecting on the discussion, Darren shared:
'We spoke about atmosphere, craft, collaboration, old and new houses and why the places we remember most are the ones that make us feel something. Ideas around stewardship, the authenticity of craft and the importance of creating enduring places and homes with depth and permanence felt especially meaningful.

Design is always at its best when it brings people together!'

Our history series continues with Chettle House, a Grade I listed country house in Dorset designed in the early eighteenth century by the notable architect Thomas Archer. Set within extensive grounds, the house was subdivided into apartments in the 1950s before being carefully restored and returned to use as a single private residence, and was restored by ADAM director Hugh Petter. The project was recognised with a Georgian Group Award in 2019 for the restoration of a Georgian country house.

From Archer’s bold original design, through periods of alteration and decline, to its recent revival, it has been a privilege to help restore coherence to this significant building, respecting its historic fabric while securing its future.

A detailed history of Chettle will feature in our Architectural Historian and Researcher Dr Helen Lawrence-Beaton’s forthcoming book on Thomas Archer, to be published by Unicorn Publishing Group in Summer 2026.
